Foglight HID Conversion

Members: Im a newbie here and am waiting for my 05 E55 to arrive from Port clearence in New Jersey. My issue is I want to swap my OE halogen based fogs to HID system. Is everyone happy with their output from the OE fogs? Is it easy to install hid system in the OE housing? I did it in my 2001 M5 and they were great. Please give me your feedback and it is appreciated-

You may need some tweaking (like installing a resistor) when you install the HID coz HID actually draws less power (~35W) than stock halogens (~55W), and you might get a bulb out signal on your dash. I've saw what they call warning canceller for sale in Japan which I'm pretty is nothing more than a resistor wrapped in a nice box.

E55 AMG WAGON
As I recall

My S6 Avant has them.. There use to be a company called HIDs4less in Rhode Island that was awesome and had them dirt cheap.. As I recall the government does not allow HIDS anymore to be brought into the country(I may be wrong). Silvania and PIAA make pretty decent white bulbs.

There are plenty of HID retrofit kits on Ebay for good prices. The trick is to find one with true Hella ballast and philips bulb. The W211 fog lights are H11 type.

The MB bulb out warning is annoying...

I replaced my foglight bulbs with Xenons.. the ballasts plugged into the stock wiring, and the bulb fit into the foglight housings perfectly. I got them from www.umnitza.com and never got any type of warning about a bulb out or anything.

Thumbs up

jello: thanx so much for the reply-as soon as i asked the dealer @ it he said-no way, too much heat bla bla. I told him heat is less, to try and 'edamacate' him so he said 'let me check on it'. I had the bmw delaer replace them in my 01 M5 w/o problems. How much of a PITA was it to install, mount ballasts, access housings, etc.?
thanx for your tech input-the Joker

I would love to put 6000K HIDs into my fogs, but I'm afraid that the warning lamp will come on. Check out this thread.

It was actually really easy to install.. into my W209. I jacked the front end up, pulled down the panel under the foglight, plugged the wire harness into the ballast. Used double-sided tape to stick the ballast to the inside of the bumper, than plug the xenon bulb into the ballast. It took about 5 minutes to do each side. They work great.. but that's on my 2004 W209.

It might work on a W209, but the electrical system is different in the W211. I'm pretty sure is doable coz I've seen similar setup running in Japan. A member on the S55 forum actually recommended this shop in Tokyo for getting HID retrofit kits that would work with MB. http://www.aoyama-pitin.co.jp/

According to my limited Japanese knowledge, the website claims no problem.

I also contacted the owner of the shop and he said that there should be no warning signal on the dash.
