Hello everyone! I'm a new owner/member from Chicago, and just wanted 2 introduce myself. I have been following some of your threads, and find them extremely informative. My '05 "Beast" is silver with the charcoal/blue interior, drive dynamic seats, lighting package, panoramic roof and rear spoiler. I am currently in a dilemma! I am looking to upgrade my wheels and have been considering the HRE 542R's. (E55 Rocket, yours look HOT!) My problem is I'm in Chicago and I don't know if I should go 20" or 19". I need some advice...please post your previous positive/negative experiences. Thanks in advance!

Go for 19's. In my personal opinion, I'd rather keep the 20's and higher to larger sedans, coupes and trucks/suv's.

That way you can go wide! 8.5 in the front and 10 in the rear with a 110% promise of no rubbing.

Thanks for the advice! Would a 9 instead of 8.5 give me a more defined lip in the front?

The problem you'll have with a 9" front wheel is the lack of lip protection from the tire. If you put 245's on the front, which is the recommended size, the wheel lip is more exposed and you'll stand a better chance of getting curb burn.

Thanks Darren, looks like 8.5" is the way to go! Whould you recommend 275/30/19(R), 245/30/19(F) and what brand is best?

The recommended size for a 19" rim on our cars would be:

Front - 245/35/19
Rear - 275/30/19

I personally like a little more cushion on the rear wheel and I would go:

Front - 245/35/19 (same as above)
Rear - 275/35/19 (this will be 1" taller in overall diameter, but it will not rub)

I had 275/30/20's on the rear of my car and it rode much better than the recommended 285/25/20's. Plus, an added bonus is that it fills the wheel well better and looks like you lowered the car. Most people would tell you to go with the very top option I listed above as it meets the overall dimensions of the stock tires.

First off, welcome to the board! Second, from experience with a pothole and 20's....go with the 19's.
Besides the pothole issue however, the 20's weren't that bad overall. I had the Maya DTR's on my car, check the pics on my website (address in signature).

Hey EKAZ, just left your website and saw your damage! I have heard that the City has reimbursed drivers that have incurred damage from city potholes. You might want to look into that if it occurred within the city limits.

Beast Fanatics

Welcome ENDSMTG from Shy. I'm a new E55 owner and board member myself - got my beast about 2 1/2 mos. ago. To everyone else reading this thread - am I correct in sensing that, of all the MB models represented, that the E55 owners seem to be the most fanatically satisfied with their vehicles, crazy about mods and performance, and comparing with / talking to other E55 owners? Why are we like this? Any opinions? I can't wait to get off work each day JUST so I can drive home!!! I'm glad to be a member of this club!

welcome fella! thats a fat boat in your sig. just got out of a 32 fountain fever. happiest day of my life! why spend $ on a boat when it can be spent on hp mods for the beast!!! . again, good to see another join up!

and as far as the fanatics go i think its cyclical. when i first got my car it was pretty dead being an 03. then some gets an ecu, then another gets ecu pulleys, then those plus headers. pretty soon were doing nitrous, 16" wheels/drags, and its really a disease. but the e55 forum is the most active forum on mbz or real close to the c.

Hi Peter B, Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I'm definitely trying to be the fastest thing on land or by SEA!

Calipers

ENDSMTG - thanks, I like the red calipers, too. I was torn between yellow or red, and went with red and am glad I did with the silver car (I think yellow might look better on a black car, but that's MO). Anyway, I'm from Jacksonville, FL and bought my car at Brumos. The Brumos racing shop is right there on the same property, so I had them just do the calipers at the racing shop out of convenience. It wasn't cheap, cost me about a grand (anything done at a MB dealership is going to be costly). I am sure you can find a less costly way to do it. Make SURE they put the AMG logo back on the calipers, though!

Welcome and congrats! I myself lived in Chicago for about 20 years, when Rush Street was still trendy place to go to. (So you can just imagine how long ago was that.)

Perfect delivery timing of your car - I remember that spring is the best time of the year for cruising in Chicago!

I visit Chicago at least once a year but have no desire to return to there (as much as I love the place but I'm getting too old for the "Chicago weather".) And I'm sure you know how spoiled we folks are from the Bay Area (San Francisco) when it comes to weather!
