But the question is what would most people prefer? I'd pick pedals i think.

MB doesn't have a true manual, it's an auto (read: torque converter) with some manual control. Ferrari, BMW, Audi and even Toyota, have true manual transmissions for their sequential shift cars (proper clutches actuated by the computer).
It would be cool to see MB develop a manual that can handle the HP/TQ of an AMG engine, but based on the complaints I've heard about most of these no-clutch-pedal manuals in auto mode, it doesn't really fit the mission of the car. I saw a test of a Maserati Quatroportte and they were complaining that the car was very lurchy and not smooth in traffic when using the SMG.

The MR2 (Toyota) and BMW's SMG are perfectly fine in traffic IMO.
