I have an 05 e55 amg and its time to replace my rears. I'm going to go with some sp2s in the rear in the stock size. will i be fine running the new sp2s in the rear and the conti's in the front?

also is this the best choice in tire i can make? i want equal or better performance than the stock tires but a bit better tread durability. I dont track my car but i do drive it pretty hard.

 

Are you talking about the Michelin PS2????

I would go with new PS2's all around, and for the rear step up to the 285 series tire and for the front go with a 255.

Its a wonderful tire and will change the way your cra takes on curves and anything.

btw, u cant have better durability and more grip, u gotta sacrifice, the ps2s r by far the best tire ive had (im on my 2nd set) and it has very good tread wear considering the performance

 

ahh sorry, i meant ps2s. hm....now that you guys said i should replace all 4 tires...i think im in a dilemma. Should i just order 2 more contis for the rear for now, and by the time those wear our, the fronts will be equally as worn. When that time comes i think i'll be ready to order 4 ps2s. because my fronts are fine...sound good? yay nay?

 

It's smart to replace all four tires at the same time.. if you have the cash.

How 'fine' are your fronts?

Beware btw, the PS2's have had some balance issues. You might want to watch out for that.

 

the fronts only have 5000 miles. I can replace all 4...but i cant jsutify tossing 2 perfectly good tires

 

If you want more performance, and high(er) mileage out of the tires, you should probably consider the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's.
I am a total PS2 fanatic -- but if you I think that you're not going to be impressed with the 'tread durability' of the PS2's...

Go with 2 PS2s in the rear. Problems occur when you start mixing L to R.

 

The difference between the Conti's and the PS2's is just so outstanding that you won't even consider that you threw out two perfectly good tires - you'll consider you threw out two crap tires that happened to have a decent amount of tread on them!!

Do all 4 and enjoy the huge difference. If you truly drive your car pretty hard, there is no question you will get more value in terms of enjoyment than the cost of "wasting" the tires...

 

i've been running the f1 gs-d3's for two years or so...great tires, great grip best tires i've run...i've had them on my s430, s500 and the e55...don't forget tires are the only item between the pavement and the car...to me, it's the only place you don't want to skimp on money...i can nail my e55 about 35 mph when wet on the goodyears and they will not spin! i think both the ps2's and the goodyears have a wear rating of 220 or so...tread life shouldn't vary much between the two tires...both tires are great...you can't go wrong with either one but i would replace all four tires if you can!!

when i replaced my tires i went with the 245's up front and the 275's in back...285's may rub...don't know?

I had the GS-D3's on my E55 and they howled like a banshee over grooved concrete and at low speeds. I couldn't stand them and switched them out for Michelin Pilot Sports. Needles to say, I wouldn't go back to the Goodyear's again.

 

Or not! Yeah I haven't actually mounted a pair myself yet -- but I have become very close to trying them on a couple of my cars that are ready for new tires come Spring....

Was it just noise on grooved-concrete? Or was there tramlining, noise at other times - other things you disliked about them being on your E55 as well?

 

Do the 285s in the rear rub?

 

The noise was at low speeds on any road surface but on grooved concrete, such as bridges, the noise was way too loud. I actually pulled over a few times becuase I thought the tire was blown.

They handled ok but I didn't feel that they handled deep puddles very well and had a tendency to feel as if they were hydroplaining. I was completely underwhelmed with these tires. I have an open mind with tires but these did not perform as expected for tires in this price range. Go with the Michelin Pilot Sports.

i'm still debating over the michelins and goodyears. based on tireracks rating the goodyears have a higher wear rating (8.0).

So my question is this. How many miles did you get from your ps2, or goodyears? how agressively do you drive? 1-10. 10 being most agressive. I dont track the car, but i do drive agressively...i have a very heavy foot.

I got around 18,000 on my GS-D3 and they were worn flat out! I do a lot of HWY miles and don't drive crazy. I'd imagine, if you were an aggressive driver, that the GS-D3's would wear out in 10,000 - 14,000 miles. I've had my Pilot Sports for 20,000 + miles and they still have plenty of life.

 

How would you compare the two tires apart from wear characteristics?

Good question. I am considering doing the same.

 

I like the Pilot's much more and view them as a much better tire all around for our cars than the GS-D3's. The GS-D3's may work great on a sports car but I wouldn't use them again on my E55 due to the excessive noise. The straight line grip may be only slightly better with the GS-D3's than the Pilots and the traction also may be a little better on damp roads too but the Pilots tread through really wet roads better and are a much quieter riding tire. Both tires are good on the twisties and in hard cornering but the GS-D3's wore much faster.

 

I have heard alot of enthusiasm for the GSD3's. Only 'complaint' that I've heard about them often-enough is road noise on irregular surfaces.
I had decided that I wanted to give them a test drive (all of my test drives tend to be 'extended' ones as I just happen to be able to afford to do that...) and see if they were as good as the apparent enthusiast consensus out there says that they are. I have a couple of vehicles which are due for new sets this Spring, and figured that I'd mount them with the Goodyears so that I could do my own evaluation. Now I'm not so sure.... I prefer the PS2's to anything else out there, and utilize them on every vehicle that I can -- but I don't want any ignorant brand loyalty from preventing me and my passengers from having the best tires possible on the car....
