I just put new wheels on the car off a freinds CL600 whose lease was up. They are 20x9 front and 20x10 rear. The tires are 254/35 and 285/30. My questions is has anyone tried or is using 255/30 and 295/25 tires and what were/are the results. They seem to fit fine as they are but with a 9" width in front i can go to a 255 if it will fit and with the 255 and 295 the overall height will be closer to stock. The tires on now are semi worn Pilot Sport AS and the grip is worse than the stock Conti's.

I will post pics as soon as I get around to washing the car, they are Maya GR5's silver with a polished lip.

 

The correct 20" wheel set up is 245/30/20, 25.8 inch diam and 285/25/20 25.6 inch diam. What you have, is a much larger diameter tires, 26.7", for S and CL-class. Also, your wheel offset would be very different from E55 . If you now go to 295/25 on the rear, the diameter will match the front 245/30/20 perfectly at 25.8" but, still less than 255/30/20 at 26".
The extra width may cause rubbing of the inside lining of the wheel well (especially with different offset) and at maximum acceleration (weight transfer to the rear if your car is lowered) it apparently triggers ESP and the whole rear "wiggles until the car levels off after accelerating. Stay with the first size I mentioned and check the offsets.
If you like the wheels but they have more than 10mm too much offset, say ET44 front instead of ET 30, you can get hubcentric flanged spacers from H&R which will push your wheels out to the desired offset, without resting the entire wheel weight on the lug bolts only.

I think that it would be a mistake to go to a lower profile tire (even with the extra width).
I also think that with your living in Florida that you made a mistake going with the Pilot A/S's.
I suggest you go with Michelin PS2, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3, or Continental Sport(Extreme?)Contact 2's -- and I would very strongly suggest that you fit them in a size and profile that matches OEM overall diameter.

Have you tried to see if they rub with four people in the car. I have 285/25-20's with rolled fenders and no rubbing whatsoever.

I did want to try a 295/25 so that I can finally get rid of the conti's and get ps2's. Luke at the tire rack said that with my offset the 295's may rub. I think my car is also a little lower than yours.

I didn't go with the A/S that is what was on the wheels from my friends car and yes they suck.

You are a master of the obvious, that is the reason why I am asking about using 255/30 and 295/25! Go to tirerack.com and look at the spec page and you will see that all the dimensions are there for the tires.

I'll make it easy here are the diameters, as you can see the larger sizes in the 20" are much closer to oem diameter but the width on the 295 might be a problem that is why i'm asking if anyone using 20's currently has experience with any of these sizes.

I haven't had the chance but I did have my friend sit on the edge of the trunk opening with the car parked and you could barely get a finger in there. He is about 230lbs. Did you do additional rolling of the fenders? they are rolled from the factory.

My suspension is stock for now, have you tried 255/30's in front? That is my concern also with the 295's is that they will rub. They haven't rubbed yet.

Even though I have 19's, I was wondering if anyone else with 295 rears is having the same "wiggle" sensation under acceleration. A couple of threads by Loren discussed this a while back. I am definitely getting some rub on the inside of the wheel well with the 295, not the outside where rolling the fender would solve the problem. These 2 threads go into it in more detail with the 2nd one giving a definitive solution.

well I guess that answers my question if they rub on 19's they will rub on 20's. If I can't use 295's in the rear there is no point in going with the 255's in front. Going with the 255 and 285 I think would drop the nose to much and make the car sit funny.

I have ran the 255/30/20 and the 295/25/20 before without a problem they were custom offset wheels but they did not rub whats so ever I have attached a picture.... If you have any questions let me know

One of the things the Dealer warned me about was two different tire diameters front to back. If you have different diameters the car may think a wheel is slipping because it is spinning at a different speed(rate). The computer may try to compensate to balance the speed between the front and back and even error.

 

with the stock 18's the difference is .4" as it sits now with the 20's the difference is .1" if I go to the bigger tire sizes the difference will be .3" at least that is one problem I won't have to worry about.

 

going to 20" is there any problem with the suspension bolt in the front? Some I just spoke to today said I would have to shave a bolt, not sure what it's too but I felt it under my wheelwell, they said it would have be removed to ride on 20's.

Can someone help me on this? Is it true? and what's the bolt too, I'm guessing camber...

 

HI there, I have no idea what you are talking about, I've had the wheels on for a couple of weeks now and they don't rub except at full lock when parking. Do you have a picture of the bolt you are talking about? My wheels are 20x9 and 20x10.

 

no, I just felt deep into the wheel well and felt a bolt, I was told by two place they need to cut it out... not sure I can take a picture with the wheel on and my real jack is broke... waiting for Valentines to get have my wife get me a new one! lol
