Motor Trend CLS55 vs. M5 (March 2006)

Has anyone seen the lates edition of Motor Trend. On page 124, they test the CLS 55 vs. the M5. Here are the figures:

....................M5...............CLS55AMG
0-30.............2.0 sec............1.8 sec
0-40.............2.7..................2.5
0-50.............3.7..................3.3
0-60.............4.5..................4.4
0-70.............5.7..................5.4
0-80.............7.0..................6.7
0-90.............8.4..................8.3
0-100..........10.0................10.1
1/4 mile.....12.9@114.9....12.7@ 113.6

Why do they continue to test the new M5 against the CLS55AMG? Isn't the CLS slower than the E55. Certainly weighs more than an E55.Almost 500 pounds more.... I believe the December 2004 Motor Trend had the E55 doing 0-60 in 4.2. 0-100 in 9.7, and the 1/4 mile in 12.4@116.2...

Yeah. and 0-60 for both vehicles is 4.5 seconds. I call bullsh**. Someone please point me to a magazine (R&T, Car & Driver, etc) that has the CLS 55 weighing in under 4300 Ibs. The car is heavier than the E55. I can't believe MBUSA would lie though the skin of their teeth. That is absurd......and actually pisses me off when I look at it. HAS ANYONE RACED AN E55 AMG AGAINST A CLS55. BOTH CARS STOCK. NOT TRYING TO START A CIVIL WAR, BUT I DO NOT THINK THE CLS55 IS FASTER. THE E55 IS THE FASTEST SEDAN SOLD IN THE US (from 0-100mph) PERIOD.

CLS is lighter
Weight distribution may be a factor in 0-60 times.

the M5's 7 speed is key here, that extra MPH trap speed shows that the M5 will start pulling away at 115 MPH.....

the CLS might weigh a tad less than the E55, but the E55 is more aerodynamic... looks are deceiving, the CLS looks heavier, and more aerodynamic to me....

I raced a e55, straight line on a highway, we were both stock, did 3 runs up to 125, 1st race I had him by half a car length, and the 2&3 by 3/4 to almost a full car length, Exhaust sound are way different. Suspension is different. And I believe (I could be wrong) but I thought someone told me ecu were slighty different. Any know or can confirm this?

PS, I have driven both, I and felt the difference, hence way I it bought over e55, don't get me wrong great car, but the cls55 is much sportier car in every aspect. At least that's my opinion

I disagree the cls55 is more aerodynamic, I have friend that has e55, and next to each other, the cls55 is sleek more rounded and lower (cls55 height 54.7, e55 57.2 per mbusa.com, why would they lie about weight & other figures), the e55 is built a family seden platform.

1/2 to 1 car lead to 125MPH comes down to who got the jump, and who had more gas or junk and options in the car....

you disagree with wind tunnel testing??

E55: .27
CLS55: .31

that's not insignificant..... the E55 is more aerodynamic.... I agree, the CLS certainly looks more aerodynamic... but it's not....

ok let pick, both car clean we both keep them for fun and super clean. Gas= lets assume I had another 37 lbs more gas then the e55, we both weight about the same, maybe 10lbs diff. So overweight even. The jump- hard to say, but it looked like as clean as you can get, the e55 driver also agreed it was pretty fair start for both of us. He also expect the cls to have an edge. Again that's my experience, can range depending on car, break in, and of course drivers. I believe were counting hairs.

Why is it than that the latest edition of Road & Track shows the weight of the CLS 55 at 4307 pounds. January 2006 Car & Driver lists the CLS weight as 4324. This compares to The January 2004 Motor Trend showing the E55 weighing in at 3857 pounds and the December 2004 Motor Trend showing the E55 weighing in at 4100 pounds. Seems like a wide difference if you ask me. No where have I read that the E55 weighs more than 4100 pounds.
The CLS 55 (despite MB's claim it is a coupe) is a bigger car. Look at the stats:

..................E55...................CLS55
Length, in.....190.9..................193.5
Width............71.3....................73.7
Height...........57.0....................54.7

CLS is 2.6 inches longer, 2.4 inches wider, while the E55 is 2.3 inches taller. Sounds like the CLS is a bigger car to me. How could it weigh less? I don't believe MBUSA's website.

Were both cars the same year? Also keep in mind that both cars probably vary in terms of the HP and torque. What I mean by this is that if you race two stock E55s against each other, you might find that one beats the other by 1/2 to full car length simply because one has more horsepower than the other. And they both can be stock..

Hey,

I am taller and wide then one of my brother in laws, yet I weight less and I can run faster. MB has no reason to lie, we have seen countless time the MT & CD numbers don't make sense either.

Again we were asked if anyone raced a cls55 with a e55, I am giving my real world experience. Others may experience diff. I always believe that both cars should be very similar, but I see the mag. also are comparing the M5 to CLS55 because the believe that these cars are in the same class and should go up against each, no disrepect the e55.

I agree, this is true too. I still believe overall both these car are ver, very similiar, cls is just sportier looking.

well if your going to believe their drag number, then gotta believe the rest of the info. is true too. You pick from here and there to make your statesment. You have to be consistant, either believe MB or don't. I am believer.

I do not believe a lot of things on that website. It is all marketing. Although drag times might be different in the magazines, as well we the weights, I have not seen a CLS weigh in less than 4300 pounds.. Don't get me wrong the CLS55 is a very nice car. I am somewhat sore that they haven't made a CLS350 to dilute the prestige of the E55 the way that the E350 does? I am also sore that the E55 seems to all but vanish from the comparisons against the E55 when the CLS is supposed to be a sport coupe. I have seen some mags compare it to the M6 and others to the M5. Ridiculous...
