E63-"kid gloves" encounter with a 944 turbo

Just got home after a spin in the e63 and have to share this tib-bit. I pull up to an intersection w/ a stop light. A kid in a modified(lowered, exhaust, chipped-he told me)944 Turbo pulls up next to me. We both had our windows down so we say hello and he nods like he wanted to have a go of it. He asks me about the car. Yaddi-yadda: no s/c, more displacement, more HP(???), less Torque than e55. He tells me about his car real quick. He revs his engine a bit before the light turns green smile'n his as_ off. I wasn't going to hammer it, because it is usually a busy intersection and i didn't want "5.0 pick'in me up", but there was no way I was going to let this guy get ahead of me neither. I just give mine half throttle, a spirited take-off, but far from seeing a flashing triangle and I just gently walked away from him, with no hard revs out of the e63. All I could hear behind me was a turbo whine like an F16 taking off, combined with an aftermarket exhaust sounding off. We went to sixty and I hit the brakes.

I know this was like him bringing a knife to gunfight but, the kid had fun and he left smiling wide not knowing I wasn't WOT. I was impressed with how little it took to dust that car off that was a damn quick car in the early '90's, very respectable depending on what else he had under the hood.

Cheers,
Pilot e63

A "chipped" 944 turbo makes about 280 hp+/-, nothing that a "380 rwhp" E63 shoudn't be able to handle...ow, that was bad sorry

Does the car that is "killed" have to be owned by others? If not, then I point to this story as an earlier "kill" by an E63.

Guys guys eeeasssyyyy.....

I was trying to compliment you on beating another car in a race so easily, even if it was half throttle and not really a serious head to head battle.

but far from seeing a flashing triangle and I just gently walked away from him, with no hard revs out of the e63.
I honestly thought this was the first instance of an E63 here in the states on the streets getting the W.

Wow, you think I screamed out the N-word and starting telling jokes about your mom and wife.

While I am often wrong, I am seldom vicious and I am sorry if yet again, my comments came across wrong.

I recently tried to get you E63 guys your own section of the forum to back the heat off you guys and even posted tonight that you guys need your own picture sticky.

I perceived all your comments in exactly your intended tone. I am not sure why others seem miffed. Probably just a misunderstanding of intent.

Thanks Jakpro1!

Sorry Jakpro,

Tone can so easily be misunderstood here on message boards. Just took it way more sarcastically then I guess you meant it. Tough to tell when exclamation points are used more then once.

I too agree that e63 and e55 boards should be separate. They really are two different cars and seems like too much time/energy here is spent on who has the bigger... hp output, 1/4mile time, etc. etc. The internal strife is getting old to me. We just have two groups of people here that are very enthusiastic and proud of their cars and bumping heads is inevitable.

Why should they be seperate? Same chassis, just upgraded motor. Aren't the W210 E55s lumped in the same forum with the W211 E55s? People need to...

- stop acting like children
- grow thicker skin

... that's my .02 anyway

Hmmm...I guess the E63 seats must be much narrower.

06 E-55-95-F355S- 99 Porsche 911 C2 w mods
I know of a few 951's that are putting down 450+ rwhp and would walk a E63 or E55 without too much trouble. The 951 has huge potential as a platform for bolt on mods and has a very vibrant aftermarket segment considering the age of most cars, they were built from 86-91 and weigh around 3100lbs.

Consider you can pick up a mint example for 12-15k and add 5-10K in mods and have a car that will embarass almost anything on the road in a straight line and in the corners, near 50-50 weight distribution, rear mounted transaxle, 4-wheel independent suspension and timeless good looks. It has to be considered one of the best bargains out there!

3100lbs and 450rwhp isn't going to "... embarass almost anything on the road in a straight line ...".

Oh really? A stock E55 runs around 415 RWHP in a 4200lb wrapper and will almost embarass anything out there barring a few super sports cars(Z06, Viper,Porsche 997TT, F430) yet a car with 450+ RWHP and 3100 lbs won't???
How do you figure?

At 450rwhp @ 3100lbs (gross weight), yes it will take only a selected few to match (i.e highly modded 996 or 997 TT, Toyota Supra TT (these things makes easy 600-800rwhp), RX-7 TT, exotic cars such as F430, Murcie, maybe even highly modded E55's) to match against this car.

And we know we don't see those cars very often on the streets everyday.

You're comparing a heavily modded car to stock cars. A Porsche 944 Turbo makes what, 175rwhp stock? It takes a helluva lot of work to get 2.5x as much power out of it.

My point is that when you start comparing a 450rwhp/3100lb car to other modded cars, it's pretty weak. You can take a C5 Z06, install a cold air, headers and cam and be there.

A stock 951 makes 247bhp and when the car was first produced by Porsche it made quite a bit more, but the car was putting down faster lap times than the 911 turbo and 928.

Due to marketing reasons (the 951 was quite a bit cheaper) Porsche decided to limit the 951's output by keeping the boost low etc.
A simple $3k bolt-on kit from Vitesse Racing yeilds 350+ rwhp and for another 5k 450+ rwhp is waiting to be had.

So add the price of a pristine 951 12-15k + 10k in mods and for 25K (less than a V-6 Honda accord) there are only a handful of cars that can touch it in a straight line and even fewer that can hang with one in the twisties!

I have owned quite a few P-cars including a 951 and can tell you for the money they are very hard to beat, if you check out Rennlist you will find quite a few 951's running 400+ rwhp on the cheap.

The E63s have to start somewhere. Was the 944 at least an "S"?

It's got to be a 944 turbo. I think a 944 S would be murdered by .. an E320 CDI... let's not even talk bout the E63

ps. not knocking on the 944. I had a 944 turbo (951) myself. That was an awesome car and still more fun to drive than my CLK55, despite being slower (mine was bone stock and burning oil past the piston rings)

Again, I am not sure how you want to define "kill", but the 3 fastest times for a CLS55 were slower than the 3 fastest times for my E63 at the (slippery) California Speedway track on the same day.
