AMG63 R&D #1 (Free 18 RWHP)
To establish the baseline, I used trezai's CLS63.
At 1000 miles he dynoed his car at another shop and, if I am not mistaken, ended up with 414RWHP on Dynojet 248.
After 3500 miles the car put down 424RWHP which is exactly what I was expecting it to do. Unfortunately, due to the lack of time, we could not find a way to pick-up rpms, so there are no TQ readings - only wheel HP.
While the car was cooling down, I took the airboxes off to examine them. The box size is a bit on a small side. Bigger design would be worth some power. More importantly I found an easy 18RWHP in them.
When you take them apart, besides stock air filter, there is another kind of filter - Charcoal (Please see first picture) - it's function is to keep vapor emissions from escaping through intake manifold and air boxes.
On E60 M5, which has the same filters, removing them was worth 12-17RWHP. So, out they go. Using a flat screw driver simply push the edge of the filter out from behind the tab and 10 seconds later it is out.
On the dyno, car went from 424 to 442RWHP an 18 HP gain, with a nice bump accross the whole curve.
So get your tools and get at it -
Thank you for listening.

Oh great gains!!
dumb question Vadim?? why do they put it there if it doesn't do anything other than restrict power?
am I 'risking' anything by removing this part? will dealer notice or be mad with me????
Just want to be certain...
thanks
There are many Porsche guys on Rennlist who can attest to a HP loss with K@N filters. Numbers don't lie.

I'm still against calling it "throttle reset". But that's just me.
Here's the thread I posted about them back in January:

448RWHP is probably more than my ASP E55 is putting down... however torques can't be compared.
more and more I like the E63..
who is going to be the first 63 to visit the track without the famous charcoal filters.
The first picture shows the air boxes, highlighted with the top two red arrows. There are two. Each air box has 5 torx screws holding it in place. The third picture shows one of the torx screws.
You can access 4 of the torx screws easily, but the fifth is hidden underneath the front plastic piece highlighted by the third arrow in picture one. I popped it up with my fingers. You can see it popped up in the second picture.
Once you have all 5 screws removed, lift up the box so that you expose the underside of the cover. I did not remove the box from the intake assembly, there is enough room to stick your hand in there and remove the charcoal filter. Just stick your hand in there, grab some fabric and tug on it. Comes right out. Put everything back in reverse order (except for the charcoal filter of course) and repeat for the other side.
Thanks to trezaei and Vadim for their pioneering work!

trezaei, do you have an ECU tune yet? This should get you another 20 rwhp...
Can't wait for my E63...
I havent driven the cls yet...
The ML sounds a little louder now.. I did a couple of 0-110 runs, and I can feel a difference. The ML churps a little now.. Its never done that before..
The powerchip and now this has made a Vast improvement.
Im just wondering if I should get the ECU retuned now? Since there is, Im assuming more airflow now..Either way.. thanks again for the info..
I remember 2manycars posting this before, just never got around to doing it..
But your dyno up top made me jump on this right away
Thanks again

It's that's the case, I wonder if these 63's do gain or open up the engine better as the milage grows.
I think this only applies to the 63's... Unless late model 06 55's started adding the new filters.
also, I think the ECU would adjust automatically or retune itself with more airflow

, but G-timers aren't perect, we need to meet up bro! gotta run
