Exclamation My car jumped off the dyno-SCARY!!!

Today I took my 2005 E55 to the local Subaru dealer, who does dyno testing for all the "ricers" (including my son's MY06 STI)
I put my car in DYNO MODE, we strapped the rear suspension to the dyno machine, no blocks under the front wheels (front rollers).
First run: in 4th we exceeded the DYNO's pre set maximum speed of 200kph/125mph. Tech did not know how to increase the speed limiter on the dyno!
Second run: in 3rd, my car accelerated with so much torque that it jumped out of the rollers! The tech jumped on the brakes instantly and the strapping gave him the extra split second to react. Otherwise, he would have gone straight through the fan and into a Subaru parked against the opposite wall!
Needless to say, he wasn't game to try again...
Has this sort of thing happenned to anyone else?
On a positive note, even though I did not get the maximum power reading,
due to 4400RPM/125mph dyno cut-out, my maximum torque at the wheels came in at a decent 600Nm/443ft-lbs or 723Nm/533ft-lbs at the crank,
which is not too shaby for a stock car with Green Filters.

That had to be a sight! Everytime Ive been on the dyno, there is plenty of straps and also blocks under both the front wheels, front and back side.

I did have the tires break loose one time and I had the feeling it was coming off,but I just rolled back the throttle and took a deep breath of air.

I always worry about that, but like Jrocket says, the straps and blocks are always in place.

Glad nothing happenned to the ride, Rafal!!

that could have been horrible! i'm glad everything ended up okay. the most frustrating problem i have is finding enough big guys to put in the trunk...otherwise it just breaks the tires loose.

Thanks!
How do you guys get maximum power reading in 4th at 6100RPM, when the speed of the car in 4th at those revs would be 177 mph? The car is limited to 155mph!
In 3rd it will hit the rev limiter before it hits the speed limiter at 132mph/6500RPM.
Or maybe the DYNO mode removes the speed limiter?

Dynodynamic machine not letting you go over 125 mph...I had same with my DYNO...but the machine re-calculates everything futhers and give the final numbers anyways...

It they needs 4 stronger CAMS which cost around 4k each for the machine to be able to run faster then 125...

Rafal glad to hear no damage was caused.

In regards to your first question, yes it has happened to me before and was very scary. To make a long story short, I usually strap my own car and forgot to lock one of the ratchet straps at the rear of the car. On the third pull the strap pulled out and the car jumped of the rollers enough to hit the fan in front and almost made a complete left turn into the wall. Thank God nothing else happened and the small marks on the bumper buffed out. Moral of the story for me was don't become complacent, always double check your straps and chuck the front wheels. The chucking of the front wheels is actually the most important thing to do imho (ie 2wd dyno), with the chucks in place the car will not come of the rollers even if all the rear straps came off.

As far as the speed limiter it can only be removed by ecu flash. Dyno mode will not remove the speed limiter.

That's the same issue I have with small twin roller dyno's. With the one larger roller on the dynojet or the bigger mustang dynos that is not a problem untill you start making over 600 + rwhp on our cars. After that you just dyno with drag radials on the car.

Thanks for your support!
I still don't know how everybody runs in 4th gear to maximum power at 6100RPM? This car hits the 155mph limiter in 4th at 5500RPM which is not its peak power!

our dyno goes above 200mph, so we never have any worries about exceeding the maximum allowed speed...it also reads up to 1200rwhp/1200ftlbs, so not too many can eclipse that either...the worst part about it your situation is that the tech jumped on the brakes, that is the worst thing you could ever do on a dyno machine, that's why the rollers have their own brakes to slow down the car...glad nothing catastrophic happened.

This is tru!!!! Very tru!! But the car actually pulled off the dyno and the operator perhaps had no choice. Can't stop the rear tires from rolling with the dyno brake once they yank the whole car off the dyno!

You are correct. The rear wheels were totally out of the rollers, ready to launch off the top of the ramp when he hit the brakes. The straps got fairly tight in the process...

Glad to see your car is okay! It's funny to see dyno shops that have no experience strapping down powerful cars.
