E55 Exhaust Cutout Pricing..Help!!

So i am seriously considering getting the qtp exhaust cutouts put on my car right after the headers like this..... gocpt.com/gallery/e55_cutouts/photos/DSC08238.html

I live in chicago and i called cpt and they want $1400 to do the job...Does this sound a bit high or right?? I was reading around the forums and some people are paying 400-500 for the same job????

It all depends what you want.

On the job in the pics (DSC's car, I think) the primary cats were removed, custom piping installed, underbody tray trimmed, etc.

He's most likely talking about replacing your primaries with hi-flow cats, then custom piping to the muffler, removing the resonator.

If you want something simpler, call back. I know he has a set of dump pipes sitting on the shelf, waiting for some cutouts.

+1 sounds very high but like ChicagoX mentioned, you need to explain to them what you're trying to do.

Do these actually add power? I was thinking about getting the headers and X-Pipe but if these will make the same power I would rather go this way. Please let me know!

BEST AUTO SVC (773)467-4301
corner of harlem and devon in chicago...across BP gas station
they installed an e-cutout on my turbo integra awhile back..they even cNc machined a flange for it to be purty....

look for adam....his dad's friend got a cNc mchine shop who customed the flange.....im sure it wont cost you 1500.
and if you dont need a flange then im sure they can install it..

quality of work was A++

btw my integra use to run 11's on 10 psi ...fun track car

You know, you're right.

I think spending $12,000 on an exhaust system is a much better idea.

if you can't afford the proper exhaust, then leave the perfectly appropriate stock exhaust on there.

aftermarket exhausts on benzes make me sick anyway.

If they are quoting you $1400 it's not because they are trying to rip you off, it's because to do it right, it takes that long. I've seen what's involved and I wouldn't trust just any muffler shop to do this work, not even for a second. CPT is far from the cheapest place in town, but that's for reason. If you are going to get it done, get it done right. CPT is the only shop that touches my cars. Don't skimp on quality, only to regret it later.

FWIW,

I talked to CPT today when I was picking up my car and the price they quoted you includes the cutouts, which are like $500... it's not a quote for just labor.

There was another E55 there having it done.

E55 or CL600, if I could make up my mind

Opinionated much ? I have a custom built exhaust headers to tailpipe on my F-Body, and use electric cutouts that I can open and close on the flick of a switch so I don't have to wear ear plugs on the way to the track.

But I guess swapping your entire exhaust every other week would be a smarter choice.

EDIT:
To the OP, the cutouts run around 150 bucks each retail, so they charge 1100+ labor ? That's ridiculous !

Those pictures from CPT are my car. The work and quality are impeccable. There is fabrication done for the install.

Here is something you should know. The cut outs right after the header sounds like a jet right above your head and flames even shoot out. The unfortunate part is the heat is brutal on the cut outs and they have failed numerous times. I have even replaced the servo motors on both of them. They just can't take the heat.

I just last week had them moved to just before the mufflers. The sound is more "mature" and loud but not like behind the headers. Behind the headers the sound wasn't as sophisticated as it is now. More fitting of an MB now.

Install should be cheaper right before the mufflers.
