4 wheeled car.
So I got my resonator removed and an xpipe put in....

And I can hardly tell the difference Went w/ a 3" pipe. Now going toward the engine, after the resonator, there are two little, what looks like cats (secondary cats I think they're called?). Anybody remove these two? Will it not pass smog? Any issues w/ check engine lights coming on after removing them? Is it going to improve the sound? Right now my car sounds soooo quiet. I want to make it growl more, but I don't want to go aftermarket on the exhaust system really....

Any ideas?

i also removed resonator and put 3" pipe yesterday...
sound is louder than b4...

u can remove 2nd cat and there's no smog/CEL issue...
it will be louder than resonator delete IMO...
if u want more growl, u may be better off with aftermarket exhaust than 2nd cat delete...

I did the resonator delete as well and instead of Xpipe I used two 3" stainless Steel pipes and just connect them seperatly. Mine has become noticably louder under load. At idle sounds the same. Once I get over 1k RPM the growl is prominant !

yea i did the samething.. resonator delete and 3" pipes replaced the secondary cats.. but i was wondering if the x-pipe would sound louder than my 2 separate pipes.. also.. i dunno if its just me, but i think ive lost a lil bit of torque... and a trick ive figured out with my car.. when u drive it.. drive a bit aggressive for a lil bit, upshift, downshift, rev up.. once the muffler is warmed it.. the exhaust sounds so much more growling and louder

After removing the secondary cats, do you get any cabin drone? I've got the resonator delete pipe on the way, and was thinking of removing them too.

My E55 is the family car, and we often spend an hour or so on the motorway.

Had an Eisenmann exhaust on my old BMW E38 740, and that sounded wonderful around town, but was annoying on the motorway.

I have no droning issues at freeway speed (70+). The raspy rumble comes into play between 800 and 1600 rpm... perfect head turner in parking lots.

The only way to make the car significantly louder is:

1.) Headers
2.) Mufflers

Changing the piping and deleting things like the resonator are not really going to do anything. The mufflers are the biggest sound restriction, just ask the guys running Eisenmann Race Mufflers. Car sounds insane.

There are a few examples of people losing power when playing with the exhaust.

I have yet to see a full documentation of any exhaust work on a 55 that has shown before and after power. Headers make power yes but I have not seen anything about exhausts/mufflers

To make it louder
Cut open the muffles and remove the baffles.

i took out my resonator on my 07 e550, and the guy at midas replaced it with 2 straight pipes. it did get a bit louder but it really wasnt the sound i was hoping for. what are you guys planning on doing? are there any other things i can do to improve that sound without going to an aftermarket exhaust system?

I agree. For my e63 the resonator delete wasnt enough either. IMO I think removing the secondary cats gave me the tone I was looking for without it being too much and not going aftermarket.

No I am contemplating the idea. Max.H has done it so waiting for him to share pics and vids. Vadim has done a couple and he says it sounds good but it is a pita to remove all the glass wool.

Mikey: I knew you were asking for them. So I made sure to take pics of the process.

I will upload the pics tonight, then take sound clips this week. Don't want to thread jack so stay tuned for a new thread.

so if i removed my secondary cats, what should i replace it with for best sound? the guy that removed my resonator actually put in straight pipes, but from the sounds of msot of the threads x-pipes have the better sound so im pretty choked about that.
