Is my IC pump bad?

I have not run auto tap in about 8 years but just bought a new version to start gettign bas info on the 55 before adding mods. Ran an 08 vette and had great power on first run and then car started to seem weak after first run. These runs promted getting data.

Ambient was 84 deg in Houston last night and 80 this monring, per the dash gauge. In general unitl I can fine tune my logs, IAT goes quickly to 150-160 range at nromal city to hyw driving. Engine temps are steady at 198 range no matter how hard the car is run. After a short 20-70mph WOT run, IAT will start to creep quickly to 180 range. Drive a fewe miles and they still do not srop much, make 2 more short 40-80 mph runs at WOT and they will get up int he 196-208 range. I have heard no SC at 199 IAT but I still feel the car pull at 208 deg. IAT and the blower is still whinning. Did not push it above the 208 to see what will make it kcik off . Timing seems to pull hard after 160 IAT .. Even at 195 IAT, I may see 16 deg timing for a second, bu then it drops to 11 deg. only. Again, just general samples until I can fine tune. My purpose right now is to check IAT, IC pump and cooling sytem.

What IAT temp should I see in this heat and with casual short burst? Pump bad? I have 32,000 miles now.

I have to double check but if I start up cold and drive a few miles, IAT will be 145 deg. Engine temp 190 and it seemed to get timing of a max of 20-22 deg? Car would run strong. After that run, everything would be down hill and hot.

199-208 is just WAY to high.

Even if your SC did not shut off as it is supposed to, your car was pulling timing all over the place and dumping fuel for sure.

Not really sure if she is going bad but I would certainly make your first mod the Johnson 30 pump to cover bases.

Okay, just did some searching for ya. Looks like she is going bad.

Basically anything above 140 and she starts to pull timing. ECU must have been freakin at 200. WOW!

Here is a post from JRocket

When my pump went out last time(fontana drag day)the temps ranged from 175-197,but stayed around 185 most of the time. You can feel the car lay down when the ecu starts backing off the timing etc.

Thanks! I did the searches also but needed a little extra convincing. It seemed the weather was colder in one of those threads.

Just made a few more real short runs and IAT was at 165.. With a short freeway burst from 55-93mph, IAT jumped to 189. Few more short blast and I saw it get to 228! I was thinking my ATAP program was bugged but it then recovered back down to 185..

Just to clarify; In hot 80-90 ambient, what should a warmed up 55 see on IAT temp in normal combo driving? Stock car that is? During a run, do you see IAT raise or lower under WOT? Mine fly up pretty quick but I read some people say they drop?

What is the max stock timing average at WOT on a stock PCM? ATAP has no knock retard reading on my program (unless I missed something) , so need a base line to see how much is being pulled. I read 16-20 deg. on searhces but not much info on that. I think I am seeing higher on a 140 IAT 190 eng, temp run but need to run more to be conclusive. ATAP sampling rates can be a pain at times. Especialy when you are hungry for info

I hope to be up to speed soon and get past all these newbie questions. Thanks!

if the temp doesnt go down the pump is totally gone

mine in texas never get above 130-140 tops! thats after HARD driving

good rule of thumb is you should be no more then 10-20 above ambiant

get it replaced under warranty or go buy the johnsonpump

how are you guys checking IAT temps? is it as elementary as running a remote sensing bulb in the intake tubes?

I am using ATAP on a laptop. Real easy. If you plan any mods with your car or want to be pre-educated before going into a dealer for service, then it is worth every dime of the 200 bucks.

Can we get IAT values from the dash (radio) info you get when you hold "0"?
