engine oil heated up and went into limp mode?

My car went into limp mode when I was stuck on traffic jam. I saw the engine oil temp were like 112F + when that happens (usually is 102ish on traffic).
I pulled over and restarted the car, everything went normal but whenever the car sits in front of traffic light or traffic jam, the engine oil temp climbs very fast approaching to that abnormal level. It was never that high temp, even at traffic jam 105F was the highest i have seen and 100F on driving.

Anyone have similar expereince?

First off, those temps are centrigrade not farenheit and they are too high. The 1st thing I would check is your thermostat.

I'm trying to visualize my dash.

I don't remember an oil temperature "gauge."

If my conversion calculation is correct that is about 233 degrees F, which is pretty high, but I would not think it's high enough to have the car shut itself down. As someone else stated, first have the thermostat checked. Do you have modded pulleys or anything that might affect the function of the water pump? I assume your car has an electric fan??? Is it working properly? Last but not least, crawl under your front bumper and make sure there are no obstructions to either side of the radiator, make sure there is no garbage, tar, dead birds/animals, etc. stuck on there that could affect the passing of cool air through the radiator. While you are down there make sure there is no major damage or dents on the radiator that could affect the passing of air through the radiator or affect the flow of the coolent/water inside.

In a traffic, my E63 got to 113 one time (at band camp) - oil temp - C not F. I was worried because when traffic started moving it took quite a while to cool down. I posted about that concern, and the concensus was that it was normal. However, my car did not shut down or limp like you stated?

a car that gets very poor gas mileage.
For what it's worth, my car usually sees 112 - 123C with city driving and freeway cruising. When crawling in traffic (freeway) it can get as high as 130C.

I think it's all relative to what your car normally registers versus how much it increases from there.

Your oil temp increased 7 degrees C (as does mine).
I seriously don't think you went into limp mode because of that.

Woot ok, dealer called.
They said they found camshaft sensor malfunctioning and waiting for parts to repair it. hopefully jsut 1 more day.

and he said that the oil temps seems normal, I guess its just a bad combination when that happens, I really don't reacall I seen that high before, 12 degree seems a lot to flutuate...but then I really don't remember =P

Now a malfunctioning camshaft sensor will definitely put your car into limp mode.
Was your car idling roughly, like the whole car was shaking?
