Hand Built AMG.... by myself. A little OT.
The actual build itself wasn't highly difficult but the circumstances surrounding the build weren't favorable. I recieved a pile of parts and a rolling chassis and was told to turn it into an S63.
Background- another technician found the engine leaking oil due to a porous block. AMG wanted the engine block, pistons, and rods only to be replaced. The parts were ordered after the engine was completely dissasembled. It took 5 months for all the parts to arrive (go figure), during which time the car was bought back and the technician, who originally diagnosed and took the engine apart, quit. After the last parts finally showed up (the main bearings) I was told to turn it into an S63.
The piles of parts that I started with, which have been moved back and forth over the last 5 months.

Old upper crankcase with rotating assembly still installed on the left. New upper and lower crankcase empty on the right.

New parts including gaskets, pistons, rods, bearings, etc...

Perfectly good upper crankcase after being stripped. What a shame.

Sorry for the lack of pictures in between, as my goal was to finish asap.

Will post pictures of me "breaking in" the new engine later!
Hope you enjoy.

WOW!!
How hard would you rate it compared to other engines you have assembled. My tech told me setting up timing a bee-otch. ;

The starbucks tool was implemented by myself, surprisingly enough they don't list it in W.I.S. as a special tool.
As far as assembly diffuculty, it's a fairly easy engine to assemble as in nothing out of the ordinary. The hardest part was knowing what went where and in what order, because I didn't take it apart and this was my first time deep inside a 156 engine. Along with finding/ordering all of the bolts and tidbits that were misplaced during the 5 month wait. Timing was almost too easy as I went into the process expecting to have to do some thinking, but this was by far the easiest engine I have ever set cam timing on.
I'm a mercedes tech so I have W.I.S. (workshop information system) available at the touch of a button. It was really only needed for torque specs like you mentioned and telling me that cam timing was easier than I thought.
I fired it up today. Sounded good, just some valve train noise from some of the lifters not being filled up yet. I couldn't run it too long as I am waiting for the clips that connect the tranny cooler lines to the radiator.
"Break in" run tomorrow!
