Ipod, auxiliary input question
Just been reading the archives about getting an iPod set up in my '06 E55 but some need to clarify some questions.
My car has a female plug (presumably auxiliary input) facing outward in the middle of the top of the glove compartment.
Assuming it is the aux input, is iPod just a simple plug and play? Is the sound quality less than if I did the full blown MB iPod integration kit (which appears to be major surgery based on what I saw in another thread
)
How would I access that input on the COMAND? I see no Aux button.
Also, as far as the integration kit goes...I see that with the kit you'd have to control the iPod via the steering wheel and info would be displayed via the info screen in the instrument panel. Is there absolutely no iPod-related info on the COMAND screen?
Thanks in advance!

You got it 100%. Now to get the AUX selected just push AUDIO on the left side of command, then push upper right hand screen button (screen will show aux by the button).

I don't know if I can answer that, it's so subjective. hard to say.
What I can say is aux and integration are equal in sound quality and volume.
Speaking of volume I'll be up dating my DYI I-Pod integration post with an up grade that equalizes the volume when you switch from CD to radio to I-Pod to SAT, many have complained of low volume from the I-Pod we have a fix.

aux is alright but sound quality won't be as good as iPod kit.
plus, u can't charge iPod thru aux whereas iPod kit will charge, turn on/off itself...
if u listen to iPod often, then just get factory iPod kit... it's worth the $$$

I use the aux in right now and the sounds is fine. Definetly not the best, but once it is on for a few minutes, you can't compare it to anything else and it sounds fine to me. I plugged in a cable, ran it behind the glove back and tucked it under the center console so it is in my clam shell arm rest.
Eh, you gotta control it from the ipod (steering wheel volume works), but it is not the worst solution, considering the cost of the kit+instalation.

This is the cheapest part I have ever seen from Mercedes Benz. My cost was $0.04.

Just got car back today from iPod integration kit install. Sound quality is good but I've been more impressed with the sound quality of Sirius surprisingly.
I knew going into this that I would only be able to control the ipod from the steering wheel and view info in the instrument panel info screen...but I can only seem to navigate within an album or playlist. I thought I'd at least be able to fully navigate my ipod artists, albums, etc. but can't seem to do so. To switch artists I have to pull the plug on the ipod, select who/what I want to listen to, and plug back in.
Am I doing something wrong or is THAT limited?? If that's the extent of its capabilities, MB should be ashamed...I mean it's ridiculous enough that you can't do anything on the regular COMAND screen...
MB should also be ashamed about the lack of either standard bluetooth or easily/economically added bluetooth.
That stuff was pretty commonplace when my car was built in March 2006. I think BMW 3-series got bluetooth in late '03 models (maybe early '04).
End of rant...
Can anyone answer my ipod question?
Thanks in advance

The aux plugs started in 06ish. if you want a good full interface, check out the Mobridge piece, controls the iPod from the command system on 04-up E classes. Works pretty well. Should be about $599 installed at a good shop.
We also use a Mobridge piece with iPod and Bluetooth through the command system, works great and is about $1199 installed, it uses a parrot bluetooth so itll be compatible with your iphones, blackberrys and all the difficult LG/verizon phones.

I think if you search the forums, you will find that this has been discussed before. I remember posting about this before.
Did you receive a manual with the kit? It is part no. B6 782 4231.
That being said, you can scroll through
Shuffle Songs
Playlists
Artists
Albums
Songs
Genres
Composers
Audiobooks
Podcasts
by using the telephone hangup button and the other buttons. It takes some getting used to and I don't recommend doing it while you are driving.
All in all, most of us who have the iPod integration kit are underwhelmed with the controls. I usually set mine to shuffle songs.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the phone button suggestions. I'll try that out...

Tried it this morning and you're correct. Cumbersome but workable.
Appreciate the help.
