Traveling on a highway, 11:30pm, snowstorm.
Was being passed by a transport truck and moved over a bit to give him some room.
Caught the slush at the side of the road and went into a spin I couldn't recover.
Pinballed from one guardrail to the other.
Waiting to hear from the appraiser.

ah man sorry bro to hear about that. I had a 1996 E320 that was my every day car (replaced with the range rover now) that was totalled by the insurance. I also hit the gaurd rail after spinning across the highway and the damage was almost identical to your pictures. except that was 1996 E320 so they totaled it. Dont think they will do that here. In any case, glad you are OK. I was very happy I was driving a safe car when I hit the gaurd rail at 75 MPH. Had it been another car, I may not have walked out without a scratch. Goes to show you how safe these cars are...
wow you got 3 out of 4 panels smashed..
I had one and it was 9k, and was less than 8mpg,,
that looks to be at least 20k in damage,,
they will have to get all new panels, and bumbers, do alot of welding to weld the panels to body,, take out the entire interior and airbags so they dont cook them during welding,, like 5 weeks at least..
ouch.
sorry about that,, maybe move to FLORIDA, where no snow

Whoa that really bites. There might be a chance they total it out depending on the year. If they do insurance won't pay for anything aftermarket so you'd be best off removing all the parts and selling them. Good luck on getting it fixed.
Glad to hear your alright, I've seen much worse though at least you didn't get hurt ,do you want the ins. co. to total it out or fix her?
I can't help but to quote Fast Times At Ridgemont High-
"Dude ! my dad has an awsome set of tools, he can fix anything."

This is why I refused to get a jetta or whatever for the winter. Ill drive my BIG SAFE E55. The car 'bounces from one gaurdrail to another" and the poster can come on here and say; "oops". Now thats safety.
How'd it feel in a crash?

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I am ok. More surprised than anything else.
The pics make it look a lot worse than it felt at the time. I wasn't bonked around or anything. It was more like a glancing blow. I was trying to control it, but it happened too fast for me.
I was running winter tires. This is the second season, so they didn't have huge tread left on them. Don't know if newer tires would have made any difference. Certainly wouldn't have been detrimental.
I felt totally safe in the cabin. Could hear the crunch of metal, but didn't really feel jolted. Looking at the inside the car, you couldn't tell anything had happened.
I was travelling about 110km - 115km (about 70mph-ish).
Three side air bags and two seatbelt tensioners also need to be replaced. This was from a pothole that I hit earlier in the season. Just never got around to fixing them. Because the control unit was shot, no more air bags went off. But that'll increase the cost of the claim.
The front passenger wheel looks like it's canted out a little bit. A little too much / this way from straight. Not sure what that means. Tough to really tell, but the bottom of the wheel could be out by as much as an inch (this is just from looking at it in the storage yard).
I'd prefer they fix it. I know everyone says it'll never be the same, but I'm not to concerned about that. Right now it'll cost me double to find a replacement car. Being the wonderful econcomic times...
I was going to replace the airbags at my own cost, so I'd still be willing to anty up that cash to fix it. I've told them I would prefer to fix it.
And I've already told the adjuster that I've done work to the car. I think I'll be able to work that into the settlement if it is a write off.
If it's branded salvage or irrepairable, then I'm out a whack of cash. If it's a constructive total loss, then I'll be out a lot less cash and I'll push for that. Still waiting to hear from the appraiser.
I'm in the insurance business and our brokerage is the insurers largest brokerage in Canada, and I'm a partner. I'm hoping that holds some weight too.
Thanks for the support and well wishes. Lets all manifest that it works out!!
