Heat Exchanger Questions
I would like to have a larger OEM replacement HE made for my car. There doesnt seem to be one specifically made for the CLS so im trying to get one made on my own.
By looking underneath the car and taking several measurements it seems that the OEM Behr unit measures about 28" x 5" x 2.25" (end tank to end tank).
the space available for an OEM HE replacement and the dimensions im going to go with are 30" x 6" c 3.5" (end tank to end tank). theres almost enough space in there to fit 2 OEM units! the height is limited by the oem oil cooler, otherwise it would be possible to go over 6".
i have a few questions so that i can have this made properly and i hope some of you can help me out.
1) what type of fittings (pipe thread, AN fittings or hose barbs) should i be using, and also what size the fittings should be?
2) im hoping to just plug in the stock hoses and fittings to the larger unit. what size and type are the OEM fittings and hoses?
3) what should the end tanks look like or be shaped like? (pics would be great)
i will also get a higher flow cooling pump (not sure which one yet, but something bigger than a CM30) and also split the cooling circuit. either have a reservoir custom made (not much room in the bay) or just use the BMW power steering fluid reservoir (or something along those lines).
here is the place that i have contacted.

thanks for the help guys, once i get this done i can get a 180mm pulley and a custom tune!

The CLS55's H/E has the fittings (In and out) on the same side. In order to keep the stock location for the hoses some tricky fab would have to be done inside the H/E. You want the H/E to flow in a "S" or snake like pattern on a larger H/E.
mounting on fitting on the top and the other in the stock location would be the easiest way. You would just have to run a small hose extention. I will get you guys a pic today of the H/E I got working for you guys with CLS55's
We have a bone stock CLS55 we are putting this in. After the install we will monitor IAT's on the dyno and street. and base them over the stock H/E IAT's.
Honestly there is so much room in the CLS55 you could have a fatty H/E with electric fans too. Just and Idea.

I'm going to be doing some dyno runs with my car today with the new headers. But inbetween runs I will get some good pics of the CLS55 H/E.. Funny I happen to have my 7.3mpix camera in my pocket today so no crappy cellphone pics.
PM "hoolamonster" He is my younger brother, tell him he needs to do the CLS55 community a service and install this huge heat exchanger.

I got pics for yeah but they are at the shop. I will get them up today. The end caps are just slip on hose fittings that are held on by a clamp.
The bigger the HE you use it should be sectioned so the fluid snakes down the HE. so there should be some dividers in a larger HE so make this happen. Its a much better way then to just have two big end caps that act like reservoir. I will do a cool picture in Photoshop of what you are looking for today.

so basically u just use regular pipe thread fittings and no need for AN fittings?
also what size are the fittings used on the oem unit?
ill try and find out how the Bell HE is sectioned off.
theres some info on their HE on this link

On a side note, what do you guys think about removing the mesh grille which "hides" the heat-exchanger. Buy making it more visible, do you think it will make the car look more aggressive?

i dont think it would look too good if u removed the mesh.
it already looks mean when u can see it peeking out from under there.
the mesh also helps to protect your HE from rock damage as well.
