Things have NOT changed. Mercedes have offered AMG Sport packages for years with nice badging that says SPORT. They do NOT offer those packages with AMG badging. Period.
To get the AMG badge from the factory, you must have a REAL AMG -- engine and all.
Posers can argue with themselves all they want, but AMG Badge = ENGINE.

I think it's about the owner's intent. If you've made your S430 look like an AMG with cosmetics, brakes, exhaust, etc., and you think it looks like an AMG and decide to debadge it, then you probably are kind of hoping it will be thought of by others as being an AMG. Otherwise, why not just leave the S430 badge on? (aside from wanting a "clean" look to the car that comes from debadging.)
And if a dealer sticks on an AMG badge on a non-AMG car, then why not tell the dealer to remove it.
I think a lot of folks who debadge a non-AMG that they've built up to look like an AMG are being ambiguous on purpose. And those who have an AMG badge (either put on by the dealer or by themselves) on a regular non-AMG Benz are simply clueless. What they're clueless about is that most people don't even know what an AMG is, and if they do then they know the car isn't an AMG. So either way, it doesn't work to any benefit.
In the end, people can do whatever they want. I really couldn't care less if the rest of the world knows I drive an AMG or not. I bought the car for me to enjoy and not to use as a gold chain. It all comes down to what the product really is and not what other people might think it is.
Both Mercedes and BMW use the AMG and M packaging to sell cars. No biggie, it adds some nice cosmetic touches to the cars. But they don't call an E350 an E63, or a 335i a M3. And they don't give a rat's a** what a customer does to their car as long as they keep buying them.
This sort of stuff goes on with all kinds of products. There are people running around with badges all over their body. Watches, clothes, handbags, jewelry. Some of it's fake, some real. The world is full of badge ******.

I saw a huge poser today. I saw a newer clk 350 or 550 today which was a very nice car and white in color. BUT, the car had an AMG Black Series badge on the back with a clk63 emblem, and on the sides were 6.3 AMG badges. The car did not even have an AMG package or anything and I was disgusted!!! I wanted to snap a picture, but it was a guy in a suit with his two kids going to subway, and I did not want to cause any problems. I did though give him a head shake of disapproval and he just looked down because he saw my car and knew that I knew he was POSING!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty funny/sad that it was a guy in a suit with kids. You'd think once you have kids...you don't have a reason to pose anymore unless you're REALLY trying to overcompensate for some "short coming"...
Get one of those Nissan Quest mini-vans that actually have strip clubs on the nav instead.

My son got this for Christmas! It doesnt have AMG brakes, floor mats or seat emblems.......Is he a poser?
