Swapping in the S55 driver side intake snorkel: 30 second DIY! Part # included here!

Okay, so I've read all the threads talking about the driver's side intake snorkel, and how the E55 is smaller than the SL55's and yadda yadda. I ran across another thread from someone who used an S55's snorkel. Well, I figured I'd give it a try.

Picked it up last week, and it was literally "plug'n'play". You have to squeeze the accordion a bit to get the radiator inlet side to fit, and you will need to make sure the round opening to the airbox doesnt crinkle or bend, but that's it.

It's much easier than messing with a heat gun and bending an SL55 snorkel, and the S55 snorkel is MUCH more free-flowing than the E. You can see the airflow restriction in the E's just by looking at it.

Part number is A 113 094 12 82, for an S55 driver side intake snorkel. Cost was less than $20.

Good luck!

FYI, the E55 passenger side snorkel is larger than the driver's side so you could pic up that snorkel if for some reason the dealership is out of the driver side snorkel of the S55

I believe one of the members used a heat gun to open up the mouth of intake that's near the radiator. This opening is also quite a bit smaller than the passenger side. expanding that opening to fit the snorkel would be best IMO, it would also help seal it up and prevent the hot engine air from coming in.

Hey Karl, I doubt anyone is going to feel any gains out of this but I would do it just because it seems more efficient over the stock setup. The drive side snorkel is very restrictive and the opening is smaller then needed. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this alone may not be noticeable but possibly combined with a few other things you should start to notice a measurable difference. JMHO.

In the end, I need to make everything I have perform as efficiently as possible to meet my goals.

I'd be lying if I said I felt an actual difference in between having it and not having it. I mean, the car feels a bit more responsive, but I'm pretty sure that's just placebo effect. You can see the big difference in the flow of the tubes, and I also snapped that little front rain-shield piece off.

So the passenger side radiator duct is larger than the driver's? Hmm. Getting back there to enlarge that will be a *****. Maybe I'll rig something else up. Does anyone have a pic of what the motor looks like with the stock airboxes gone? Like, where the fangs-style intake attaches to the intake manifold?

I took a few pics of the S55 installed and the E55 vs the S55 (in-car) but they're cellphone pics and not the greatest. They do, however, show you that the big kink/crease/bent-inwards thing of the E55 snorkel is NOT present on the S55 snorkel. I'll put them up a bit later.

On a side note, how tough is the driver's side headlight housing to remove/reinstall? 10 minute job? Or do you have to pull the whole bumper?

Pull the whole bumper. Member Yacht Master has a good thread on how to do it.

Finally got a pic comparing the E55 driver snorkel to the S55 driver snorkel.

I also got a roll of the gold heat-reflective tape from Summit, going to wrap them today.

That's a different thread; they use the SL55 snorkel. I use the S55. S55 != SL55. They are different shapes and the S55 fits a lot easier, without having to use a heatgun to shape it.

Funny I was looking at my snorkel (erm... ), and wondering where I could get an unobstructed one....ordering it now!

The rad unfortunately had a poor sized gap compared to the passenger side.... mbe taht needs some work as well... Car in bits so may as well do it now.

Am I the only one who feels like the drivers side snorkel was maybe made smaller or restrictive for a reason?
