New Intake. Heat shield tubes. Small IAT sensor mod

Had some time to mess with the car yesterday so....

I put my custom intakes back on last night. I wrapped them in DEI heat reflecting blankets that came in yesterday. I also bought additional DEI heat slip ons designed for sparkplugs, cut them and insulated the intake air temperature sensor. The body of the sensor gets additional heat from under the engine bay and can cause the sensor to read up to 10-15* F higher (Saw a couple thread about this on terminator cobra forums)

The IAT sensor is located in the Y pipe outlet of the intercooler...

Here is a photo of the intakes. No filters just fishnet.

Sorry for cell phone pics, my camera wasn't charged. I'll take better pics, and ofcourse video

Oooo and the supercharger whine is extremely loud.

What do your custom intakes look like without the wrap on? Can I see a pic of this fishnet setup you're talking about?

they are in the background of the 1st picture. they are welded aluminum, each side is made of 2 pieces.

What do you mean by the fishnet, though? I remember doing something like that a long, long time ago on my DSM (had a section of a K&N filter clamped over the turbo inlet) like this:

It was horribly restrictive. What is on the end of your intake pipes? Any pics of the filter?

HEY ... DEI gave me some free tubing like that with my purchase. That'll be a good place to use it on the AIT sensor.

I'm gonna try it!

Soon as that data logger gets here.

I read about it on the Terminator Cobra forums and idea behind it made perfect sense to me. I have absolutely no idea of how much of a difference if any it will make in our application. It is def very hot back there, even after I let it coold down for about 30 minutes with all the covers off.

I'm going to order some of this heat wrap stuff. However, I'll need to build two intake pipes. Do your intakes mount up to the existing snorkels that fit into the radiator inlets?

There are a whole bunch of different products I've found, and I'm not sure which ones will work the best. Here are the ones I've found:

Cool-Tape (if you are using the snorkels, this would work great for fitting around the non-round parts of the snorkel)- http://www.designengineering.com/pro...p&pid=30&tid=1

The velcro stuff that you are using: http://www.designengineering.com/pro...p&pid=33&tid=5

Reflect-a-Cool cut-to-fit heat shields: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DE...2/?image=large

Another kind of cut-to-fit heat barrier tape (looks like the opposite of exhaust header tape): http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TAY-2531/?image=large

I think the stuff you are using is much thicker than the tape and most likely is a better insulator/heat reflector.

How did you build your intake tubes? Did you just order a pre-bent aluminum piece from somewhere, or did you mock it up and weld it yourself? You've designed what looks like an incredible setup, and I'm very interested in trying it out myself.

As far as accessing the IAT, how long did that take you to set up? I'm looking at the Y-pipe that your intake tubes connect to, and it looks much different than mine... mine is a black Y, and two rubber accordion-ish pieces are connecting it to the airboxes (see http://www.echoradio.org/~nait_sirhc/benz/100_0484.jpg). Is your Y-piece that same piece just painted silver?

i think the heat blankets i got were the best option for the application because they were perfect in length and the also do not stick to the pipe meaning that there is some air in there. the gold tape is the only possible option that could be better.

intakes were custom built by shop for a member here who parted out his car shortly after having them done. i was a bout to have them built and he pm'd me and offered his to me.....so i bought them. they basically mate up to the existing air inlets and i am thinking of leading them out to the front.

as far as your Y pipe question goes...
the Y pipe that you see in the "close up" photo is not visible under the hood unless you remove the stock throttle body black Y, and two rubber accordion-ish pieces are connecting it to the airboxes. the metal Y will be under there.

the Y that you see in the last picture with the intakes was custom fabbed for the intakes.

I agree ... it makes perfect sense. It the body of that AIT sensor is acting like a heat sink, it's gonna give a false reading and shut things down sooner.

I suppose the only draw back might be if Mercedes calculated temperature variation into the programming. But I'd doubt that.

Looking good Mark! I can't wait to see your Data logging results. It seems perfectly logical considering the heat we get in our engines. Good luck and keep us posted.

Nice idea. You are running no air filter at all? Are you running a stock TB? That fabricated y-pipe is nice, I wanna find someone to make one for 82mm TB

prodigy,

any chance you have a link to the cobra thread that discusses the logic behind IAT heat wrap? I am interested in doing this as I will be going down/back there soon.

also, i am having some problems making it out in the picture, but how exactly did you wrap the IAT sensor? Did you wrap it all the way around leaving only a section at the the top part (with no wrap) open?

also, while on the topic of messing with the IAT, i found an old old small thread about messing with the IAT sensor to "trick" the ECU....just food for thought: https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...tance-iat.html

don't have the link at work but here is a link to the product that i used for the IAT...
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DEI-010409/
i basically cut 1/4 of one of the sleeves, unplugged the IAT sensor, put the sleeve around it and plugged the connector back in place. the wire goes off to the side so it actually holds the sleeve in place.

No worries - hope your retune solves the driveability problems you've been having (and runs even stronger too!)

I got a roll of the gold heat barrier tape today, I'm going to tape my tubes up and see how it performs.
