Today at the drag strip...

well i tried again at the drag strip today with some drs (mickey thompson DRs on kosei 18s). i was the only MB out there (again) and the tower guy was saying that my car was a mazda! haha i think it was because of my chicken scratch on the tech card. they dont really know their euro cars out there unless its a VW. i did see a car run a 7.5@~187mph though! anyways, it was pretty busy today and i was only able to get 3 runs in and this is my first time running a drag radial. i guess still need much more practice with this drag setup.

on my best run i did a burnout until the track guy told me to stop, i then lined up and held my revs to about 1000-1100 rpm and when the light went i stepped on the gas a little, let off for a split second then got on it. that hesitation before i floored it was a big mistake, i could have had a good run right there! i guess i need to learn to trust the DRs to grab! on that run i was able to pull off a 12.073@120.11mph with a 1.955 60' time.

based on my previous time of 12.240@118.26 with a 60' time of 2.122 (aug.7th on street tires), shouldnt my ET have been lower? based on these numbers what kind of times do u think i could get if i had a good launch?

anyways, i wish i could have had a couple more runs since 11s are right around the corner. i also need a new tune and 180mm pulley as well! this is frustrating but ill try again on the next drag day!

i think i know what to work on the next time im out there (i did better with each run) but please give me some more pointers if u have any.

nice run! was your 12.073@120.11 with the 1.995 the pass where you let off the gas? if so, it is likely you would have had a better 60 ft and better ET. and if there was no traction loss at all when you got back on it, it is possible your trap speed could have been just a tiny bit higher too!

good job and get some practice in! work on those launches. i bet you could even go a little higher than 1100 rpms with DRs on.

yes it was on that run.
i had no traction loss either.

part of the reason i did that was because i was afraid i would lose traction. on my very first one i just mashed it and spun out through first and second gear.

haters crazy
Trust the d/r's. Why did you let out if you arent spinning? Your car should run 11s easy. I was hesitant at first with d/rs as well but WOW do they stick! Mickeys stick so well

what setup are you running now? With my car stock I get the best times with the tranny in sport, but with D on the dash and the car lowered and T/C off

That is with my drag radial on also and I get no spin,it might be different if you have alot more power tho.

I like that 120.11mph! Makes me feel good about my car after those runs we had.

i guess i thought i was going to spin and i let out a bit. i really dont know why i did that, it was a dumb move on my part.

when i did the runs, the transmission was set on sport mode, suspension on comfort, and i had it raised.

Both times at two different tracks I ran with TC off, Trans. in S, and suspension in Comfort mode. I ran about 15 times at the first track and was cutting 1.81-1.83 60 foots on regular old Falken street tires. The car was dead-hooking evey time(good prep), and no matter how I launched it it cut the exact same 60 foots. Leaving off idle, 1000 rpm, 1200 rpm, it didn't make a lick of difference. All runs were in the mid 12.3X range @ 114 mph. It was a hot and humid day, full tank of gas, 280 pound driver, bone stock car.

2nd time out was at the 1/8th mile track. Starting line conditions were worse, so I had to walk ot out every run. Made about 15 passes again, and even walking it out I was still cutting mid-low 1.8X sixty's. With your trap speed and a sticky tire I would think something in the 1.7X range should be very easy to come by.

I did notice that the car felt way slower and less torquey at the track than it does on the street, so heat soak was surely killing torque, likely helping my launches. I may go back tomorrow since we have some cool weather now and see what happens. With a 1.80 60' you should be firmly in the 11.80's.

We are lucky that our cars launch so well. Every car on regular street tires I have taken to the track requires an act of God to cut something in the 2.0X range. Trying to put our ~500hp down in a Camaro or Mustang would be an absolute joke.

wow nice runs man, and on street tires too!
i wish i could get 15 passes in on a drag day. that would really help me get the hang of things.

i hope i can achieve some 1.7s or 1.8s next time around so that i can get some good ETs

Great job Terence! With a little more practice and learning to trust your DR's I could easily see you in the mid 11's. I have one other suggestion for you but I'll keep that between us...LOL. Inside joke guys.

If you really want to improve your times and launches a track rental day is a must. It's very hard practicing when you only get 3 runs in 5 hours. Good luck!

Absolutely! It takes run after run, and I always hot-lap, usually running 3 in a row and then taking a break. I don't know what tracks you guys go to, but at GLD they run on weeknights, which are cheaper than weekends and possibly less crowded. I always get there when the track opens and make a bunch of runs the first 1-2 hours while the people are trickling in. I'm not shooting for world records, and I'd rather see what my car will do hot off the street for real-world results. I also refuse to drive 1-2 hours each way and pay $40 to run my car 3 times.

A drag radial should erase those spinnin fears. Looks like you hooked but did not maximize the run due to your experience on the street tire.

You lowered your ET .167 and your 60ft time was also .167 quicker a true 1-1 with you letting off.

Had you stayed in the 60 ft time would have been 1.7 and your time 11.6.

Just know you have .2 in your 60 ft and .4 in your et. The 12.07 is definately good but for your 120 trap 11.80's should be no trouble and 11.6 is likely your perfect pass

i tried before but was not able to generate enough interest because the track wanted 2k for the rental and they were capping us at ten cars. i wouldnt mind that but the others didnt want to buck up.
i guess i really need to head south!

hey guys, i hit the drag strip again last night. i was able to run an 11.853@115.96mph. i had a pretty decent launch with a 1.803 60' time. i think my car was pulling timing though as my trap speed was quite low as i usually trap around 120mph. even on my other runs where i spun out and had a bad 60' time i was still hitting around 115mph.

im thinking that the car is pulling timing due to the 180mm pulley that was recently installed. i wanted to run my 168mm pulley but i had to have this one installed as the guys from Powerchip are flying in tomorrow and ill be having a custom dyno tune done on monday, they are going to flash my RRS s/c as well! ill definitely do more runs after that.

any other ideas on why im trapping much lower now with the larger pulley?

Whats your 1/8th mile MPH vs your prior pass's? So lower mph could be Timing issues, from high intake temps, or from knock or both. you should invest in a cheap OBD data logger. about 100.00 bucks.(scantools.com) this way you can verify timing, and check intake temps. The other issue could be belt slip.

7.854MPH (12.073@120.11mph)
7.638MPH (11.853@115.96mph)

ya ill buy a datalogger soon.
how can u verify if my belt is slipping?

i hope all is good with the car because my tuning is on monday!
i cant wait.

1/8 MPH not ET
Belt slip is a bit more diffacult to figure out but look for rubber dust on the belt area, frayed belt, ect. It will be more visable on the dyno with sharp dips in the power curve.
