Cobalt SS
Anyone ever come up on one of these little buggers?
Clearly modded. But I did not reel him in nearly as fast as I thought I would.
The funny thing is I was about 100 ft behind entering the 270 degree cloverleaf and 50ft behind exiting. It was 2 lanes and I thought I would blow by him before enterring the freeway. That did not happen! Although I caught up and was clearly moving faster, he had the right of way as the lanes reduced and I backed off.
I checked these things out on the web. A factory modded car is 253hp (2800-3000lb) and looking at their forums, some are pushing 300-340whp.
It just surprised me. The thing seems like a good bang for the buck for a GM product.

It's probably the best front wheel drive car GM ever produced. Handles well, looks descent, good power, good mileage. My brother is getting one as a daily, just got to find one he likes that hasn't been ragged on too much.

About 2 weeks ago on a us 19 (3 lanes) I had one trying to get me to race and i am looking at this thing thinking he must be smoking crack. He mesed with me for about 3 miles and I would not bite. Then we came up on a new body vette, anyways the next thing I know the cobalt and the vette blow by me doing atleats 100 + mph with the vette 2 cars back. They raced 50-70 yards past me with the cobalt still pulling on him. I was in absolute shock that that little booger put the vette in its place. Many props to the cobalt

They may be quick, but it's still a Cobalt. My little brother has a Cobalt for his daily, thing gets something like 41 mpg. It's not an SS, but the SS seems to be the same car with a beefier engine/tranny. They may be a good FWD GM car, but they're nothing close to MB quality.

I still think the SRT-4 is a better bank for the buck car, Its purely subjective. The engine is proven reliable to 450hp. Its pretty easy to make 300hp on the stock turbo. My old one ran 12.6's with basic bolt-ons.

414 WHP, 21 lbs boost, cold day, yet only managed 12.841@114.9.

N2O FTW! If you look at dragtimes, there isn't a single Cobalt in Z06 territory except maybe a Vette that is having a bad day.

It was not a zo6, just a new body corvette. I think the new vettes are just over 400 hp at the crank.

Yeah, looks like there are some drag slips in the high 13's with pretty radical mods (water injection, higher turbo pressure, etc). Hard to imagine one of these taking a 'Vette or E55 in any circumstance other than a severely windy downhill road...
I read good things about the Cobalt SS and it turns good times around the track, but it isn't in 'our' category, either in price or performance. Respect them as the little engine that could, but no fear of being overtaken in a normal setting. Not as mod-able as a WRX or Evo. Those CAN be capable of instilling fear if modded enough...

The turbo Cobalt SS is an absolute blast to drive, it's not just quick it's a smooth bugger, much faster than a GTI and much better-balanced than the Mazdaspeed3. And the controls have the kind of consistent weighting and smooth feel that is rarer than rocking horse droppings in small Detroit product.
Still got Cobalt material quality and you can't get a four-door hatchback, but it's a sweet drive.

my friends girlfriend has one and I have to admit its is CRAZY fun to drive. maybe its the fact that its that fast, passengers were to drunk to remember if I broke something, so it wasnt mine.
one night we all went out and I played DD. THey kept telling me to go faster so I was like OK? I WAS IMPRESSED to say the least. I had a blast drving that little bumble bee of a car. I wouldnt mind to have one of those to get back and forth to work. I know I would at least make it there on time and not be on the look out for pot holes.
Its by no means a mercedes, its not targeted as one though.
Cobalt is supposed to be a practical little car
cobalt SS practical little car+some get up
if you ask me it does this PERFECTLY.

Is it just me, or does this thread seem like it should've been posted on the C63 forum, where all the crazies hang out?
I read through the whole thing & only found 2 familiar usernames

The "it's not a Mercedes" comments are pretty out there (how can you even justify bringing up a comparison?). I've driven quite a few regular Cobalts as Rentals, and they are some of the biggest POS's I've driven. Very not-thought out and poorly executed in terms of comfort and refinement. Try taking one of those bad-boys on a long trip and you'll be reaaally sorry, one of the worst.
The SS might be a fun toy no doubt though, haven't driven one. I do think they're ugly little cars though, personally.
