Uh Oh. My car is f*cked!

Took it through a car wash today and now there are error messages everywhere I turn. No power steering, ABS ESP and Active Headlamp warnings. Is it safe to drive to dealer or should I have it towed? What a nightmare!

What the hell?!! Was the hood raised? I hope you did not power wash the engine compartment. Give it time to dry and cross your fingers.

I'll bet if you shut it off and start it back up again, let it sit for a while, etc.. it'll be okay.
Also try that "turning the steering wheel back and forth while running" thing, too.

I had an 05 that did that after I powerwashed the engine, I disconnected the battery for the night and everything was fine after reconnecting it in the AM.

I didn't have the hood open but it does do a very high pressure undercarriage spray. I will disconnect the battery and check again in the morning.

Why would you guys powerwash your engine bay? You have to be kidding? Ever heard of detailing or cleaning by hand and a cloth?

With the amount of wiring harness and sensors and electrical connectors in the engine bay you are asking for trouble and gremlins. Its like driving your car into a river. Electricity and water are the best of enemies. Go ahead throw the dice and gamble...its your car.

X2! Never have I used water to clean my engine, not a good idea. Btw if you have an air compressor try blowing out some of the water being careful.

Agree 100%, it is the most foolish thing you can do. Once an electrical connector is wet and electrified it will corrode. So even after you dry every thing out and it works, the point of contact has started to decay. At some point it will create resistance and cause problems that can be hard to diagnose and expensive to fix.

I certainly agree with all that was said. Water and electricity bad!

I still do it the old fashion way...a bucket of soapy water, microfiber mitts & drying cloths, wheel brushes, etc. Just can't stand those brush marks after I've spent hours putting fantastic wax jobs on my rides.

AGREED. Why would anyone want to powerwash their engine? Just asking for trouble, and in all honesty, if something goes wrong, it's really your own fault for SPRAYING TONS OF WATER ALL OVER YOUR ENGINE AND ELECTRONICS!!!!

I just had this happen to me too and I didn't wash my engine bay but I did just drive 2.5 hours home in the rain.
When I got close to home I had to stop by home depot and as I pulled into the parking lot the car felt like it was stuck in 1st gear and all the lights in the dash went crazy, the esp, abs, went off gauge was all kinds or red errors and then I turned it off hoping to restart it and maybe all would be fine

but after I shut if off I could not start it back up as it was saying to put car in park which it was so I disconnected the battery and waited a few mins and tried again, it started up but would not let me shift out of park so I turned it off and disconnected the battery again and waited a few more mins all while still giving me the abs/esp problems .

Finally got the car started and was able to drive it and it was stuck in 1st gear and I had to drive slow to try to make it home about a mile away.
I make it halfway and the car starts throwing more errors up like engine coolant or something as if the pump wasn't working and I pulled over again and let it cool down put the hood up and waited a few mins then restarted that car again and got back on the road then the tranny started slipping and would bounce out of gear and goto neutral, I shifted into neutral and back to drive and it caught again and i was able to make it home in 1st gear, parked the car in the garage and disconnected the battery.

Anybody have any idea as to what this could have been ? I have not started the car up yet this morning but I will try in a bit just want to check everything I could before i do. It sucks to be sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck in a amg ......

I'm not reading that until you add some more periods, and hit the return key a few times.
