OT: My Cousin's 600 SEC Coupe Burned in my Driveway!
Sorry for the OT, but today was a CRAZY day. My cousins came over today and while we were inside, we hear the doorbell ringing frantically. We run to the door and our neighbor is there yelling that the car is on fire!! We bolt outside to see that the car is indeed on fire, after being turned off for about 15min. It is a rare 1993 600 SEC coupe, with the first Mercedes V12 engine. The fire dept came and had to almost rip out the entire dash to put out the fire. After it was put out, they determined it might have been from an electrical short that started the fire.
Definitely woke me up!!!

That's sad to see. Those are nice cars. Real torque monsters for that era.
I hate to see cars that aren't easy to replace get destroyed like that. KBB retail is only around 7k, so insurance will probably be a ridiculously small pay out. Even though there were only around 170 600 SEC badged cars sold in the US. Condolences to your cousin.

Sorry for the loss...but look at the insurance payout as a downpayment on something newer & faster. At least he wasn't driving it and no one was hurt! It was just that car's time.

Wow..that truly sucks. Sorry to read this. Uber rare cars but sadly many of these cars were plagued with these types of problems, although it would not do anything I would send a stinker of a letter to MB. Better it happen while there were no occupents in the car while driving.

I know the feeling, my SEC was totaled in my driveway by Waste Management, garbage truck backed in to(and over) it.
The only up side is, your cousin can look forward to a new car.

His wife crazy
Ok, 'fess up. You really want him to buy your 55 and this was the only way to make it happen, so as soon as he got in the house, you secretly let your trained, wire insulation eating squirrels have a go at it.
J/K Sorry to see the old girl go out like that.

nice parts car
this happened to my father back in 1968 in his 1940's MG while we were out for a ride. Wiring short under the dash, but since he was right there he was able to exstinguish the flames right away (then go find a pay phone, anyone remember 1968?)
Same car also had the passenger's door (mine!) fly open while taking a "spririted" left. I was 5 years old, had no seat belt to be wearing, and was hanging on to the door handle when it opened. For some reason, the site of pavement zooming by is burned into my memory 40+ years later.

I had that happen to me in a nice '91 VW Golf while taking a left off of the Torrence Ave. exit. Heard a "zzzzzt" sound, then POOOF, thick white smoke from the dash. Couldn't see a thing. I'm DIW in the middle of traffic on TORRENCE AVE like WTF! Next thing I know, there's this guy from out of nowhere, reaches thru my driver's window, pops the hood and RIPS the -battery cable loose. I thank him vehemently, then proceed to call my insurance company. I'm thinking totaled=nice, big check! About 2 weeks later while salivating at the thought of myself in my nice, new car (aka panty remover), I get a call from my ins. company politely informing that the cause of the fire was my less than professional, shadetree, very high powered, new stereo install, D'OH.
My sincerest condolences to your cousin for his loss.

This kind of stuff scares me, I've read a few stories about MB catching fire such as a member's friend's CL55 and now this. Makes you a bit weary but I also know this can happen to any car. Anything electrical changed prior to this? IIRC, the CL55 had a headlight changed before it burned in the garage.
