Anyone else annoyed by the -10 degree fan mod?
Well I am fairly new to the E55 game, but did plenty of research here before I bought one. So of course the first mods I did were to eliminate the Beast's Achilles heel...insufficient cooling.
I added a Johnson CM-30 pump, PLM heat exchanger and lowered the activation temp of the cooling fan ten degrees via Star.
Well yesterday was the first warm day here, with ambient temps in the mid 80's, and that fan was on A LOT!
I found it kind of annoying to have to listen to, with its speed and pitch constantly changing. With the windows up it really wasn't an issue, but with the roof open and the windows down it got to be annoying.
Anyone else disturbed by this? Is my car unusual, or are there other members that did this mod experiencing the same fan run on?
Will decreasing to -5 degrees instead help?
Just curious because I believe it distracts from an otherwise smooth running and refined car.

I had it done and then quickly undone. To me it was way too loud and detracted from the car. When pulling up, I got a comment on how loud that was and questioned whether it was normal...I knew then I had to have it reverted.

If it sounds the same as when our cars go into "MAX AC" mode, yeah...it's super loud. I get embarrassed when the car does it, and I turn the fan down one notch, to turn that damn thing off.
The SL, R and E all do it. Haven't noticed it on the C though.

Yes, I was too. Take it up to -5 and you should be good to go.

I like the super powerful sound my fan makes. When it winds down, it sounds like a jet engine shutting off. It gets alot of attention but never a dirty or disgusted look because it's such a clean sound.

Thanks for the responses guys...very helpful, as usual,
I am going to do some data logging and then dial it back a bit, re data log and see if there is a big difference.
personally i hate the added noise
To answer aikadus..
These are not power adding mods, they primarily help keep iat's down so the car does not heat soak as much (which shuts down the SC). They may help you make a bit more power on the more heavily modded cars, but do not specifically add power themselves (like pullies or headers). I consider them cheap insurance...lol.

If you change your thermostat to a 180, would help a lot that the fan is not running that high all the time. The water will circulate better and this will make that the fan work less time in the highest speed.
Of course sometimes you will hear it louder, but less time.

stock thermostat is 188F (87C)
i installed 71C thermostat = 160F.
never had any issue with the engine or CEL. my car was cooler than the other ones (Engine temp).
by scanguage, while crusing it was 74C - 76C. (in winter)
in summer it reaches maximum 90C with -10 fan mode.
i liked the fan mode. anyone heard it said it is like a jet plane going to fly. LOL

Behind a convertible Bimmer at mcdonalds and the lady literally couldnt order with the jet engine behind her. I laughed and laughed, then felt bad and shut off the shuttle engine for her.
