Winter Tires-When do you switch?
So when do you guys and gals put on winter tires, provided you live somewhere it gets cold of course? I live in the far northern suburbs of the communist state of Chicago, and it's already gotten below freezing overnight a few times. I was ready to put them on then, as I was breaking traction constantly, but then today it's frickin' 70 degrees out!
Any recommendations?

Really, 101 views as of this reply and no one lives where it gets cold! Makes me sad. 
Anyway, my E63 is in the shop for repairs after a chunk of concrete struck my hood/windshield/roof. When I get her back, I'll be going to the winter tires for sure.

I switched mine about 3 weeks ago even though it is nice in Iowa. Switched on the 996TT too. It's not a matter of snow as much as cold. The summer tires are dangerous when it is cold.
Cold happens fast in the Midwest. This weather is amazing, but won't last.

It's not a matter of snow as much as cold.
I would have switched by now but I have a cracked rim on my winter set up and I have to wait until after Thanksgiving to get a new set (going on vacation and don't want them arriving at the house while I'm away). I've driven with my summer tires (last week) when it was high 30's and it's a little scary - no traction and a definite "floating" sensation on the highway until some heat gets into them - feel totally disconnected from the road (which sort of defeats the purpose of having expensive sticky tires)

Cool guys, thanks for the feedback. Motorkas, I felt the exact same way when we had a few very cold days about two weeks back. I was actually very uncomfortable until I got a few miles down the highway and I was confidant the tires were warmed up. I should get my girl from the body shop tomorrow. Depending on the forecast, I'll be asking for $100 from the wife to head over and get the winters put on. Doesn't help I owe the City of Pewaukee Wisconsin $113 after a meeting with a Sheriff last night!
