Dealer just called me asking if I'd sell my E55

I've never heard of such a thing.

Do you think they had a customer asking for an E55?
Fishing to see if they can make some $ off of me to trade up?

Never had this happen before.

I told him I've only had it a year so hadn't even thought about selling. I said if you have an offer I can't refuse I might change my mind. LOL

Really?

I've had dealers do this all the time on all kinds of cars. They want you to move into something newer to keep sales numbers up.

This isn't uncommon. A lot of dealers use systems that the salesman can search through there customer base and (If you bought the car there) they can see what your approx milage is if you have equity in the car etc. and see if they can get you into something different and take yours on trade. Also The salesman or Used car manager may just be making calls on service customers to spark interest in trades.

It's common practice.

But now we'll have an internet rumor that will go viral: E55s are really sought after and rare and prices are going way up...

I got the same thing here, because its in 'fantastic condition with low miles for a 2003', says the service manager @ my dealer. 66k is low for an '03? didnt think so, ive seen '05s with less than 18k.. but he offered me 15Gs towards a trade in... said no right away.

67k on a 2003 is 8,375 miles a year. So yea that way below average

that IS below average? jeez, i thought it was a lot. at least there all highway miles, or at least 45k of them. 8000 a year seems high.. plus it only got about 5 miles on it from 2005 to 2007

12k-15k is considered "average" in the US (and also according to insurance companies, and CarFax, etc..)

5 miles for 2 years is a major waste. The biggest part of depreciation is hitting the car while it just sits and nobody is using it

These cars aren't collector cars. Not putting miles on them means you don't get any use value from them as they depreciate while sitting there. Like my dealer said, "an AMG is made to be driven, and it'll be worth less than a Honda in a few years. So don't just stare at it, drive it."

12-15

is the average. But not for luxos. Most of the first owner AMG's don't rack up the big miles since they usually have other rides in the stable.

Sales are slow now. Its winter time and still too close to last X-mas. Salesmonkeys are hungry for commissions.

That happened to me a couple of years ago. I went to the Acura dealer with my black NSX to get some service and repair work done and they called me about 45 minutes after I dropped the car off and said, 'Mitch. Do you think you would like to sell your NSX,' and I kind of laughed. It was the Service Manager and he knew I would never sell my white NSX (I love it too much, and drive it daily), but that the black NSX was rarely driven anymore so it would be a possibility for sale.

Evidently the General Manager of the dealership had been looking for a well maintained NSX for himself, and when he saw my black one in the service bay he asked about it. The Service Manager told him the story of my cars, showed him how well I maintained them, and then called me to 'test the waters'. I shot them a number since I was considering selling it anyway, he checked with the General Manager and came back to say, 'Okay...we will have a check for you Monday'. Done deal....and, no, I did not have to pay for my service or repair bill.

they want to buy your car, but you are going to be leaving in a new car and payments.

the shop i goto said an older lady went to MB and just wanted to sell her car back and they wouldn't do it - even though she had the letter from the dealership saying her car was in high demand and they would giver her top dollar!

i know letting it sit was a 'wtf is wrong with you' moment, but times were tough, and i had no time at all for it. i thought about selling it, but i just couldnt let it go just quite then. then my life eased and i withdrew it from its dark and lonely storage phase, only to discover an oil leak... that just made me furious... not even more than 3 months past warranty, dealer wouldnt give me a break. bit down, fixed it, and drove it like hell, which suprisingly made me regret parking it... but i guess lifes life sometimes.

Some people just have lifestyles that don't allow them to use their cars like crazy. Mine forces me away from my car for a week at a time sometimes. I don't even like to calculate how much money is spent each week on "Renting" (Lease) the car, when I'm not using it either. If I continue at this rate, I'll have such low miles when the Lease is up, it'll be crazy! Whattaya gonna do though, if you want a nice ride, and simply aren't able to use it all so much.

Leaving cars sitting for very long periods though, is a good way to get it all screwed up, mechanically/drivetrain wise.

.......I feel the exact same way about my e46 M3....I had a beater Toyota Tacoma...but I recently sold it....my intention was to save the ///M and use the truck to go back and forth to work...the damn truck just sat in the garage day after day....why was I "saving" it for someone else to enjoy later...I plan on driving it until the wheels come off.My daily commute is a lot more enjoyable ...

We might end up seeing fewer miles on our cars when gas hit $6 a gallon soon.

RE: Dealer Purchase

My dealer has inquired to buy my E63 three times. Each time they were candid enough to say they had a customer looking for one, weren't overtly trying to sell me anything although I'm sure that is what they also hoped to accomplish. They know the car because I take it in for warranty stuff and it is low mile in perfect perfect condition they could CPO with very little cost. Never talked price or anything, just politely told them I'm not looking to sell right now. It happens.

Holy crap!

We're at $3.20s in Maryland and I thought that was high ... I can only imagine how brutal the prices will be this summer.
