I just got this 2005 E55 with almost 70K KMs, both plugs in cyl 1 and cyl 5 seem to get burnt oil deposits every 200 or so kms of driving and car seem to be burning a lot of oil , almost 1 ltr every 1000 kms. I am getting misfire codes in both these cylinders.. however all other cylinders sees to be ok as no oil deposits on any other plugs.
Wondering if anyone else had a similar issue , is it due to leaky valves letting oil into combustion chamber or the piston rings are shot?
its my first ever Benz.. hope this issue can be fixed:P
can someone suggest any good repair shop in Toronto, canada

Do a compression test and a leakdown test. Is the car modded? Oil get's into the Cylinder one of three ways. Bad valve guide seals, Ring issues or a scratch in the bore.
Compression and Leakdown will tell the story

Compression test then find someone with a DIC(digital inspection camera).
Pull the plug and insert the camera and you can look for gouge marks on cylinder wall. Also, good to see what surface of piston dome or top looks like. A motor burning too much oil on any particular cylinder will have a ton more residue on surface of the top of the piston as well.
Also good idea make sure the key is nowhere near the ignition when using the DIC. Use a breaker bar/crank socket for turning motor over.

I always thought it was good to have camera pieces floating around in your engine!!! Are you saying it's not? Originally Posted by randallaguirre

Maybe I sounded like "captian obvious" on that one.
But you know it's been done before.

The car is completely stock and was driven by an elderly doctor, lets say worse case if the piston rings are shot, is it worth fixing the motor or better to swap with a used one from wrekers? i located a wreker yard selling a 100k KM complete motor from a 03' e55 for $6000

Id see the severity of the problem first before we start buying engines

Any smoke coming from exhaust? I agree, compression and leak down test should tell the story.
ill find some shop to do both the compression and video tests, does anyone have compression numbers for a "healthy" e55 engine?
I do see black soot deporots on/around the chrome tips in quad exhaust. not sure of the smoke.. but i guess it should contain burnt oil, since im constanly loosing a quart of engnine oil every few hundred kms.
Just one more thing, how much should the oil quantity read in the tachometer when its switched to diagnose mode? mine shows 8.4 lts when i add the recommended oil amount .

about 155 PSI +/- 5. and if you need more or less oil, the car will tell you, and 8 quarts is plenty

One indicator that your car is burning excessive amounts of oil is the "white glove test".
Go wash your car, and then drive 120 or so miles. Once you've racked up the 120 miles on your clean car drag your finger across the back of the rear bumper. If your fingertip is blackened by soot you definitely have an issue. It will also have a burnt oil smell to it.

Yes the car makes a lot of black soot on exhaust tips. Meanwhile i did a compression test at home, the suspect cylinder 5, gives only 50 PSI compression which goes to 75 when done with some oil in cylinder( wet test). the cylinder 1, gives 155/175 readings. I cleaned the cylinder put new plugs car ran ok for some time before getting oil deposits on the new plugs as well.
I disconnected the coil pack connection for this cylinder car runs smoother and apparently wont burn so much oil since the cylinder wouldnt fire anymore. Just wondnering if it is possible to still let the supercharger kick in even when one cylinder is out ie: make the ecu think that coil pack 5 is operational even though its not.
otherwise Till i figure out someone who can fix this issue the car would run like a v7 ....

My exhaust tips and bumper get dirty after 2 or 3 days of my 20 mile commute, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with my car. However, if it is BLACK like you haven't washed it in a month then yeah, something is wrong. Adding a quart every 600-1000 miles is excessive. I lose maybe a quart every 7,000 miles, sometimes not even that, but my valvecovers leak.Originally Posted by randallaguirre

What oil is in the engine? Does the car idle or run rough? Do you only use oil if you drive WOT or is it burning just on town driving?Originally Posted by e55amg_w211

When driving hard I had this problem from over a year ago and was putting a litre in every month of 5w 30 which was to low on the high temp end.
when I switched to 5w 40 it slightly improved. Now I am going to go with 10w 60 mobil on my next. These engine produce alot of heat and I feel that by increasing the high end temp viscocity of the oil.

Obviously there will be varying opinions on this one.
I can't see this being healthy for the crankshaft or the main journals. Vibrations can kill the mains.
This is going to set up a weird harmonic that is just not smooth. Do you have anyone you can borrow a beater from or a second car. I wouldnt knowingly run it with a dead cylinder.

+1
A bit risky IMO. What about the unburnt fuel corroding the plating on the bores.
I would not recomend driving around on a dead cylinders you may end up replacing alot more than just rings/pistons.

+1 would definitely superheat the cats.
