- Mercedes Benz E Class Why is My Engine Knocking?
Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs
Do you guys not find the E55 engine noisy?
There is the valve ticking lick noise ( which I'm pretty sure it's the tappets ).
Then there is this very faint rod knocking like noise ( which honestly sounds like a bent rod or something, but I've beaten the car pretty bad and have yet to see a rod pocking out of my block ).
And THEN there is that horrid whine that's uber loud when the car is cold and mellows out as it warms up to the point that you can barely hear it anymore.
I don't think my engine is bad in any way since it has yet to grenade and has been making these noises since I bought it a few months back.
Am I the only one who kinda finds it ridiculous that a hand made and stupid expensive engine is so unrefined? It sure does feel fast though...lol.
. All normal i was told. My 63 makes a bunch of noises too. Guess its the nature of the beast. With all the trouble you've had recently their is also the paranoid delusions messing with your head as well.
When my SC bearing went, I started hearing every little squeek, rattle and knock. it's all normal. they are just noisy engines.
the new TT is even louder.
look on youtube for E55 engine noise and you'll hear all the other engines that sound the same as yours.
if you think it's more, post a clip and everyone will chime in
You think the E55 is loud, you should her the LSX engines in the Vettes and Camaros. When they have an agressive cam they sound like a sewing machine!
The air pump howls like a banshee on cold starts. Sturdy as an anvil, but refined and quiet they’re not.
All that power overrides any unpleasantness.

As dansamg stated, with my pulley ordeal I think I'm more paranoid than ever...lol. I had removed the cover that goes below the hood grill because I wanted the SC to make noise...but the noises have started to bother me so I put the grill cover back on.
Gonna see some videos on youtube.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
they growl and whine because they are forced to drive on city streets all day - they are angry not being in a proper race car where they belong. These AMG motors are angry motors. But it is this anger that makes these motors so special.
In all seriousness these are noisy motors, actually race motors that have been de-tuned for the street. Remember the noises these motors make are what makes them so special. Enjoy and revel in the noises, what the OP considers a lack of refinement, is actually the sound of a very refined race motor.
Sadly, before you know it we wil be living in a world of silent electric cars and you will wish for the sound on your old angry AMG motor
The noise is normal, if want quite get a Prius.

Loved that car. Liked it better than my 996TT, but I need AWD in Iowa.
1. Loud 'tapping noise' - Injectors
2. Loud 'knocking noise' - smog/airmatic pumps cycling purge/recirc valves
3. Loud 'whirring noise' - smog pump (especially at start up or cold)
4. Vibration outside cabin/felt on brake pedal- Air purge from braking system
5. Loud 'fan sounding noise'- Airmatic pump making adjustments to system
These are just a few of the most common ones and all dismissed as normal by 2 dealerships and 1 indy.
Don't worry about them and enjoy your car

When something goes on one of these cars you will KNOW it.
Regards
