Ecu/obd tuning question

I have gotten numerous pm's about this so thought i'd post this. I'm curious myself and others are curious too...

For simplicity and non argumentative sake we will have company A and company B.

Here's the scenario... I have company A tune on my car, can company B come and read company A's tune through the obd and back it up to their computer and then flash my car with the company B tune, and then finally revert back to company A's tune?

From my understanding wouldn't you require the ecu to come out to read either companies tune?

Please keep this on topic and civilized.

+1 Curious myself.

Could a person plug in an OBD2 device and pull your tune???

In the past it was always NO, but have things changed?

I've gone through 3 ECU tuners on my SL600. Each time, company A pulled the chip from the ECU, read the current file in case I wasn't happy and wanted to revert, and then loaded their file via OBDII.

So it has to be from the ecu? No way possible to do all of it from obd? Hmmmmm anyone else?

Just went to Tibet to speak to the master. Okay just emailed Cory at Kleemann and got a response.

Cor says he has never heard of a device that can pull the tune from just OBD2. It just reads ECU ID.

Not sure about the Mercedes line, but I know it can be done.

Softtronics has done it Porsche.
I'm pretty sure Cobb has something for the GTR that uses the ODB port as well.

"Softronic is the first company to start flashing the Porsche DFI and LSI line via the OBD2 port. This along with our data server is another first only credited to Softronic."

I thought a tuner could flash between stock and re-tuned file. The reason I say this is I had company A file on the car which i sent ECU out to be programed. then later bought flash loader and had car flashed with a new file from company B. The one time I tried to flash back to stock with flash loader car went into limp mode so i re-flashed modded file back on. so i could drive it. if you cant flash back to stock or old file then i was misled by company B.

flash is a flash... either way you can pull a file FROM the ECU via OBD2 and save whatever changes you find on your computer.

You do NOT need the physical ECU to change or alter anything if we're talking tuning specifically for the w211. For example if you're tuning a c63 then you'll need the physical ECU & modifications has to be done to it in order to tune it.

In your case, ECU files can be easily swapped and saved to your computer by reading and transfering data with OBD port.

Not sure if that makes sense?!

Some tuners make a OBDII flasher which can switch between tunes.

switching between (overwriting) tunes over obd2 is entirely different than pulling/saving ecu info...

There are tools out there that will read a bin file off the ecu.

I think surcharged has the Dimsport hardware that will read the file.I know because they sent me it.

I understand but essentially from what i know is that a flash/tune is just changes done to a map. You can pull a map out as a computer file "forgot the specific type" then you can make changes to it and save it as another file which is then transferred back to your car.

Now that you have two files, one original, and one altered essentially you can switch back and forth as long as you have the tools to do so.

Yeah, be interested in Jerrys take on this.

Unless I see it done in front of me, I won't believe it.

Been so many years we have been trying and not able to pull that tune on OBD2.

Times change though. Would love to see it done!

I do not have access to ANY equipment that can read the ME2.8.x ECU via the OBDII port. I can read them on the bench, but not via the diagnostic port.

I can read thousands of other cars, but not those that have an ME2.8.x ECU.

I would love to know what hardware can.

Then how do you backup a stock file before you flash a car?

Unlike other platforms, the data inside the ME2.8.x ECU will be the same from one ecu to the next, as long as the HW/SW numbers match. In other words, you only need to ID the car.

If the customer has a tune that they would like us to save, then the ECU will need to be pulled and read out on the bench.
