996TT versus E63 P30
So how does the stock 996TT with 420 HP on tap weighing in at about 3500 pounds compare to a stock E63 P30 with 507 HP on tap weighing in at about 4200 pounds? The P30 has the performance suspension and LSD and is a bit heavier. So in terms of straight line acceleration does the 996 still win out? I know it has the AWD factor...but from a pure "grunt" perspective does it still take the cake?
Also...is the 996/997 really back heavy and prone to going ****-first off the road in corners easiy? I know that they added the AWD feature really ONLY to counter the butt-heavy drift in corners and use the front wheels to pull it around the bends.
I know there are a few 996/997 guys here...

The Awd is not "ONLY" to "Counter the butt heavy drift"
I'm thinking a few track days would do you some good

AMG,
Good point about the track...I'm a strong believer in that. I spend quite a bit of time on the track with bikes. I race superbikes CCS/WERA, so I run a lot at VIR and Summit Point. Do you track your car by chance? Where have you run? The DC guys may get an AMG track day over at Summit Point in September...I believe. I'll need to chat with Yuille.

A 996TT to an E63 is probably a driver's race. The base 996TT is actually 415HP, but the X50 (like mine) is 444HP. You can't visually tell the difference.
The E63 might get a quick initial jump just from torque, but the 996TT will likely reel it in. I like the torque on our E55 better than the turbo spool up on my 996TT.
997TT is a wildly different story. 997TT will win. Every time.
Oh, and the weight distribution is pretty close to 50/50. They solved the oversteer problem without AWD.
AWD was for the people that drive it in snow like me

T,
Good info. The reason that I was asking was because I pondered buying a used 996TT. But, I've been lazy and have yet to drive one. I do know the reputation, however. My good friend has a 997TT. It's wicked fast, I know.
I did hear about the turbo lag on some cars. But you pretty much answered my question. I was really trying to figure out from a "gas pedal" mash how the two compared. Handling-wise...well...that's obvious:-)
I might get to drive one this week.

Don't get me wrong, the 996TT is an incredible rush. It is a great car. Mine's a convertible, which is even more fun. I suspect the lag isn't as bad on a 6-speed -- mine's an automatic (for a lot of reasons).

I snickered at the drivers race comment until I found this vid.
E55 is pretty close to 996TT in this roll....and the 63 beats the 55 from this type of roll.

Guess it really is a drivers race.

MBCA GWS chapter, our local one here in MD does a VIR event in June, as well as a few at SPR. You should sign up.
As for the 996TT vs. the MB straight line they are 2 very different cars, my SL55 is a torque monster, it's modded a bit but has a lot of grunt from a dig...my GT2 is very fast but it relies on turbo boost, once it hits it's game over. To me my SL55 seems quicker but my GT2 seems faster, but then again the GT2 only has a tune on it, the SL55 has LT headers, 185mm pulley 82mm TB, tune, remote reservoir, H/E custom exhaust, quaiffe LSD etc

997TT with PDK destroys any hope in an E55/E63 W211 aswell as an E63 P30 W212.
Around the bends and twists, go figure.... P O R S C H E....

Enjoy how the thread started off comparing a base non-X50 996TT to an E63... and turned into how a 997.2TTS would kill it mercilessly. Well, duh.

I made the "driver's race" comment and I stand behind it
. The 996TT is easier to launch consistently, since it is AWD, but if you blow the launch, the E55/E63 can win. They're both low 12 cars.
My wife and i keep meaning to take them both to the track, but with a 5 year old, 1 year old twins and another set of twins on the way, who has the time?

We already do events at Summit and VIR...I instruct for BSR at FATT at Summit, and many groups at VIR and Summit both, having raced at both tracka and logging thousands of laps at each and other various North American Circuits.
