$ 56 is possible, but they would have to hound you over other service items.

Filter, paper @ $8.00 Fleece @ $18.00
So for the 3000 mile change guys use the paper, and for the 10,000 mile guys use the fleece filter.
when can we
this

Dealer insists on an oil change every 3k miles which I think is unduly conservative. Following my service indicator instead and running at just over double that. I think the dealers are doing this to boost their incomes. I know oil change intervals have a lot to do with the cumulative volume of fuel burned by the engine and believe the modern ECU can monitor this quite well. Also, modern synthetic oils can cope quite comfortably with normal levels of water ingress ( thro condensation etc.) and oxidation. *So I've no doubt the oil would be good for well beyond the service indicator level. I wouldn't however exceed that because other considerations re filters et al begin to come in.
BTW the viscosity of the oil can't be measured with meaningful accuracy by feeling it between the fingers.

Sure, change your oil whenever you like...
It's YOUR car...
However, when I come over to look at it to buy it, and possibly make it MY car, as soon as I look at the service records, well... if you don't have solid documentation of the oil changes (and everything else), you can keep the oil burner and sell it to someone else.
AND it's even better if I can verify all this with the selling or servicing dealer. I don't mind paying a little more for an over-maintained pre-owned car.
For a car that's been neglected, I would not take it for free. (nothing is free... there's maintenance and insurance and taxes and plates and...)

Google up ZDDP. Learn what it is, why its not in oil anymore, and why that is a problem in high performance engines.

Maybe so...
But then again, the uneducated or ignorant ones will buy that oil burner and likely have problems. Then the blame goes on the car, when really it was the PO's lack of maintenance that was at fault.
The spiral goes downward from there, dragging the precieved reliability, and resale values of that model down...
Not good for the current owners... But possiblly great for me when I can cherry pick the right pre-owned car at a depressed price!

"ALL oils sold in the United states for HIGHWAY use must now to conform to Government standards that it will not affect emission related equipment."
Now in a nut shell this means they ALL have less phosphorus in them. aka our engines WILL wear faster.
YES OFF highway oils are still allowed to have higher amounts in them.
It really is a shame that the government did this, but too many auto manufactures were complaining about having to replace catalytic converters under the extended warranty.
Such is life in the US now.
