Underhood Liner: How many of you still have it?

New to the E55 world but not to supercharging I'm always looking for ways to reduce unherhood temps. Seems to me these cars have quite the sound deadner under the hood.

So my question to all of you is, does anyone still have their's on? I'm thinking of removing it along with the rubber seal on along the back of the engine compartment.

btw, I'm in SoCal so I'm not worried about rain etc getting by the rubberseal.

Regards,
Chad

p.s. yes eMoving I did use the search function and not a whole lot of recent & relevant material came up. And/or the posts were by people that don't seem to be around anymore.

So when you remove the seal, how much hotter will the fresh air intake for the air-conditioning be (140-160)?

Well that's part of why I'm asking the forum....what are the negatives. My C6Z06 had zero difference in A/C temps when I removed the rubber lining. But it did help hot air escape from under the hood and that was a big issue when that motor was FI'd. In searching prior posts one person that did this also said there was no negative affects. But I believe that post was from 05.

So I'm curious of the active members today that have done it what neg side affects(if any) did you experience.

Oh I didn't mean it that way. I was just saving him the time by not having to put a post stating use the search function.

In regards to the paint issue I would be curious on that as well. But in looking at the previous posting people didn't seem to be noticing an issue. Plus a few people posted that they had aftermarket Turbos on other makes that didn't have hood liners and there was no issues. I for one have had a few cars with fiberglass hoods with Vortech Blowers sitting right under them and have had no paint issues.

My whole point of posting is someone told me it was a worth while mod but I just don't remember who it was that said it. So I figured I'd ask the group.

all that crap is one from my car -- and that dumb plastic snorkel blocking the hood vents. Supercharger is really loud -- i love it --- best of all -- When its a summer day - i can see the heat coming out of the vents.

under hood airflow management? there is no OEM airflow --- the point is to make it quiet --- once we stop caring about that -- we can remove the noise reduction crap - thus, we have created some airflow -- not sure what is the best way to max this new effect but OEm had none...

Seeing the engine heat escape thru my hood vents proves to me that this is promoting airflow -- OEM never had this airflow --

Noticed your in Vegas. So no issues with A/C while the car is sitting in traffic?

no issues -- Why would you have issues after you open up the hood temps? Warm air rises -- now the hot air can leave the engine bay thru the hood vents.

This just makes so much sense --

There's belief that since the A/C intake is right there behind the hood it would be sucking in "hot" air from the engine compartment instead of ambient air from outside. This IMO would only surface when you are sitting still.

Bottom-line is since it is soo easy to test I can just remove it and see for myself. I'm more curious if most people remove those items or leave it all in tact.

This is not something I've ever seen done before, which makes me interested to see someone do it!!! Anything you can do to make your M113 cooler is good.

take a box knife and cut the heat shield and then remove the black plastic piece blocking the hood vent. You might want to pm chiromikey I believe he has removed the rubber insulator above the radiator support and he may have done the same on the back part as well as remove the undertray's.

Yes, I agree. I only removed that black pastic thing above the TB / below the hood vent by the windshield. At stoplights, I often see the heat waves coming from thru the hood vent.

Also, out of curiosity one time, I took my shop vac - reversed the settings to blow air - and blew air through the grill and I could see some of that hot air coming out of the hood vent. To me, that means I am somewhat venting out hot engine heat while the car is moving. Not very scientific, but I was curious.

However, I have left the underhood liner and that rubber seal. I will leave the underhood liner - just to protect the paint from the heat.

As for that rubber seal, I never thought about just cutting out that portion right under where the black plastic thing used to be (and leave the rest of the seal in place). I think I will look into that idea.

if you use a box knife you can cut the hood liner so that it curves with the hood vent so your paint will still have protection but you will allow more heat to escape than by doing just the plastic piece.

i dont think the hood liner protects the paint -- thats just my opinion.

My car is white and when I touch the hood after running it hard its not nearly as hot -VS- a black car parked in the summer sun --- heck the hood is not even as hot as my black leather on a summer day,

Coming from a guy that has his "wifeys" car in his signature, really means nothing. Maybe she will give you your nuts back some day and you can act like a big boy again.

I have already been told by your father what a big boy you are. Apparently your mother couldnt get the job done so he turned to you. Its a shame you turned out like you have, but with your background, it was expected.

Dont cut the liner !!! Just remove it --you will get more airflow -- and you can always put it back to OEM later.
