How can I check the car's oil level?

I'm trying to check the oil level via the display in the instrument cluster.

When I have the car on, it says oil level can only be checked with the car off, but when I have the car off, it says car has to be on. What am I missing here?

Oil Level

Use the dipstick, you know where it is right?

When you say on or off do you mean the motor is running or not? if that is the case it should not be running.

I turn key to position 2 (not cranking engine) and check it before I drive. Works for me...

the motor has to be off, and cool before the oil can be checked. turn the ignition on. the mph or temp should be on the cluster. toggle down using the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel.

Nickel you are correct. Just follow these instructions and you will be fine. My car does not come with a dipstick. You can only check through the instrument cluster.

I find it interesting. On my 996, the engine has to be running and the oil warm. Different strokes.

Weird how different German cars can be from each other.

Almost certain your 996 features a dry sump lubrication circuit. ;)

You can check it in dyno mode also. But if your sensor is malfunctioning you end up putting to much oil into the car.
