Car cranks quickly when cold but slowly when hot.

When hot, it'll crank so slow sometimes that I think it won't start. If the car is cool however it'll crank super fast. It's done this for over a year but lately it's been kinda of worse.

Could it be the battery? It's never left me stranded and will last a long time with the radio on/car off and still start the car up super quick when cold.

Or could it be the starter? Anyone ever take out the starter just to clean it up?

I'd say Starter/Battery/Altenator in that order...

one car at a time
Are you sure it is "cranking" really fast or are you hearing a fast clicking ? My guess is it is the battery getting low. Just do a load test and you will know quickly .

It cranks fast and starts the car when cold, no clicking. When hot it doesn't click either but it cranks so to the point where it seems it's going to stop and then starts to speed up until it starts the car.

E55 w/ goods, Z32 Project underway
Starter solenoid, common symptoms, or bad ground cable. Heat builds resistance and given it's proximity, can cause issues once warmed up.

It is WAY too much work to pull clean a starter. Mine began giving me a strange noise at 122,000 miles I pulled and replaced it with factory new. No more issues. The work to pull and clean is more than to replace. I recommend replacement.

You will have to pull belly pan, remove engine mount bolts jack engine pull exhaust just to get at the starter bolts.

Mine always cranks slow, and sounds like its struggling to start. It was just a battery issue for me

yikes...didn't think it was that bad. I'll have to look at it carefully. I haven't really paid much attention to it.

Bad ground connection on starter. Happened to me last month with same symptoms. Just tightened up the nut and cleaned connection and all is well again.

Btw., and yes, i did take the starter out and cleaned him. And at 120.000 miles the brushes are almost kompletely gone. I need to rebuild it in the future....but because i didnt have spare brushes at the moment, i just cleaned all interior and lubricate bushings. It spins so much faster now....Well worth the effort!!!

do you still have meth or water injection system on your car?

i had problems with hot starts after driving on my audi for a while after i installed meth, after i while I relocated jets further down the intake to give it more time to atomized and less chance to pool up and that fixed my hot start issue there

I would start with the starter as well. Good luck.

Pulling the starter on this car does not sound too fun :-/

Hi, I wanted to know if you ever got to resolve the issue with your car. Mine is having same problem and it's really frustrating (W211 E550 4matic).
