2nd fill up. First fill up went fine. Perhaps I overfilled it. I honestly don't know.
Bah. I really wish there were SOME perminant fix to this. If it's really just a case of the wire sheathing wicking the fuel into the passenger compartment, would wire-wrapping it with heat shrink tubing work? Isnt' there some way to cover / seal the tank up top?
There has to be some way... even if it's hokey to keep the fuel vapors in that damn tank.
yeah yeah... i'm hitting the search.. just not seeing any real solutions. And I knew it going in... so I'm just venting.

So someone steals a cheap E55 at 20k, its not gonna run on gas and oil anymore. I had a 2004 new and it broke down several times and several recalls and repairs- pay to play.

So check this out. I just got my E55 recently as well and looking through the VMI I see 1000 mi ago that it's had the gas tanks worked on for the seals and recall stuff.
Low and behold I get the smell.... pull the seat and covers and find the passenger well has fuel puddled in the fuel sender cap, not outside...but inside. So I clean it real good with a rag and some parts cleaner to really dry up the fuel and park it the sun with the tank still full to let it build up pressure in the tank. Within ten minutes the base where the socket is (that is glued into the sender body) is seaping fuel from around the edges!
So, I take it to another dealer instead (Chandler instead of Scottsdale) and they honor the warranty even though I didn't own it at the time it was first serviced. Initially they said it's probably not that but after I explained my T/S process they followed my lead and it was back to me a day later free of charge.
I live 50 miles from Chandler (Sun City) and they are my dealer of choice so far.
Best, Steve.
PS. Sorry for the lengthy rambling.

That is really good to know as I have my choice of dealers and chandler Benz is close by. Maybe I'll give them a call after I check out under the seats.

Hey there AZ guys. I purchased my E55 from Chandler MB and its always been serviced there. I work with Scott R in service and he has always done me right.
There is no long term fix for this issue but if you have parts warranty get as much as you can before resorting to the "keep the tank at 3/4 full and forget about it" club.
Interesting to hear that you T/S the problem and actually found the sender housing failed. I think this is a common issue.
No way you will keep the fumes out.

E55 AMG
Once this deployment is over, I am going to take a look at this. I don't have the leak (yet), but am curious if there is a way to install a vapor barrier. This will hopefully eliminate interior fumes. I did this on my Evo while I was waiting on a new unit to arrive.

Pay to play is just fine in my book but there is no long term fix. $2000 dollar repair every year to the same assembly gets a bit old. And I have no plans to give the great state of AZ another $10k in sales tax and $2000 dollars a year in plate fees for a new AMG just to line the pockets of dirty red tape pushers.
Exactly this car is about as long in the tooth of any and its a Benz out of warranty for most which means issues and repairs.
