just took my 08 E63 in the shop the other day - (thank god for warranty) - upon start up very loud ticking sound - immediately turned off car and hopped in the 55 and went off to the office. Of course my wife took the car to the dealership and heard the ticking the whole way and now they can't replicate - WTF? at least i have warranty until next December

Well...sadly the poor quality cams thing is not a rumor. My 2007 E63 (80,000Miles) was having some minor ticking clicking sounds and began to go much louder and was always present. You can clearly notice the wear on the second cam lobe now, even the other cam is starting to wear.

^I take it that you still have the original valve tappets/buckets? Mercedes updated the design (SLS63 style) to help resolve this issue.
If you are replacing the CAMs you should replace those as well

mbtechman, in your last pic on the cam front view with the adjusters removed, what is the fastening device other than the main bolt at the front. There seems to be no positive locking device ie a flat area, or pin or key just showing the round end of the cam? Notice the 5 small circle contact areas on the end of the cams but is that all there is these contact areas and the torque on the adjuster bolt? Is that all there is, what am I not seeing?

When you removed the intake cam did you mark it previous to removal and when doing so the MB cam bracket would have been taken off, is this correct. So when the cam is reinstalled you tighten all fasteners then rotate the cam or cams to your previous cam mark and then reinstall the MB cam support, is this correct.

I take it is a customer car, with work being done at a dealership, are you replacing all buckets and cams and what is your take on the head bolts. If you are right there would you do the bolt for bolt replacement or is it not warranted or possibly money related?
When replacing cams is there a special lube applied to the new cams and buckets to ease break-in?

I have been looking for a post like this for 3 years
I also have to replace the lifters and 2 adjusters
I know I need the 2 tools you show . Do I need the 3rd tool that I see in WIS
That goes in front of the adjusters like a plate?
And what do you use to keep the tension in the adjuster( some sort of pin)?
Thanks
Erick

Anyone know how much this would cost to fix without warranty? My E63 ticks once in a blue moon at startup, but it always goes away once the car is warmed up.

@mb techman,
Thank you for the information, would it be possible to get a picture of the other tool required to hold the cams at the rear of the head.
Just wondering why there is no lube other than oil to the mating surfaces of the lifter and cam face. Break in lube is not required on new parts?
