iPad install

Anyone ever install an ipad in there E? Or maybe some other tablet? When I searched I found all kinds of threads but mostly folks just talking about it

Was thinking of fabbing up some type of clip on temporary bracket that could mount the ipad over the command unit. Something like this would be used for long drives where I could monitor traffic and police presence with waze, or load up Dash Command or Torque to Monitor the car, or load up a music library or something.

Anyone ever done something similar? Anyone ever install an ipad in place of the command unit?

Would be great to have it integrated with everything (ala Tesla)! Frankly, I think the outdated electronics are the weakest link with most cars today (including the e55).

Please PM me if you see any good retrofits.

I found a couple videos related to what you are talking about. This guy uses Android devices, but I'm sure the same app (Torque) is available for iOS products.

I was also reading over in the CL forums about another guy that did use the iPad for his. A quick forum search should bring that up for you.

Now your only problem is figuring out a way to mount it without looking goofy!

ETA: Forgot to mention but the method by which this seems to be done is through a Bluetooth adapter for the ODB2 port.

^^ That is not what the OP or I are talking about ...I already use my iPad for an interface with my OT2 & LC1 data logging.

What I am talking about is removing the stereo & nav and replacing with an iPad or tablet...I don't think it would be easy and would probably cost an arm & a leg..I also would not mount it like the new CLAs, but I guess that could be an easy route to take.

lol I knew about those apps... and I saw a picture of the CL, didn't look terrible, but not great either. I think I have a way to mount it, just need to work on it, I don't even mind it looking goofy since it would be only be used when on road trips(I already have a CB radio temp mounted for road trips as well)

I think with the command unit out you would need some type of audio processor to fill in, not sure if that would be compatible to the fiber ring

You know it wouldn't even be so bad if you kept the COMAND system there and just had an iPad up front wired through the auxiliary jack of the car. You could have functionality such as navigation, MP3 capability, DashCommand, etc... if you could just hide that COMAND system back there somewhere and then mount an iPad right up front... Maybe the COMAND system could be behind the iPad

Maybe someone could make a COMAND emulator for tablets? I don't know how well that would work even if it could be done since I cant think of any tablets with correct connections

this is probably how I am going to run it for now... There is a 30pin connector cable that has a 3.5MM jack as well as a USB for charging. I'll wire up a USB port for charging only in the glove box, then make some kind of bracket that covers the command module and allows me slide the iPad in to it. It wont be pretty, but I'll have it mounted to see if I like it

This would be a great for our cars...as noted many times on this and other forums...COMAND is complete and utter garbage. Everything else on our cars is great...but the esp the NAV...its horrible.

I had an ipad mini on my sun visor, attached with velcro and connected by bluetooth to the aux input.

If you remove the small visor and place the velcro on the mirror cover, it fits perfectly. I was able to use the ipad's GPS & Waze, Pandora, Safari, netflix even.

The setup worked well and was not intrusive. The velcro worked out nice because I could take the ipad with me easily. I could also fasten it to the passenger side if someone wanted to watch a movie when traveling.

I ended up giving the ipad to my kid, but plan to replace it with a retina version one day.

^^^ This with Mini + use the wifi for Dash Command, Or use the Ipad with (Ram) windshield mount (can take forward looking movies) (easy in ezout keeps my eyes up), The blue tooth receiver (audio to command) is a must and be sure to get a 12V to 5V charger that has at least 3 amp output (RocketFish).
apps.
Dynolicious
Logworks
Trapster
Dash command
GPS Drive MotoinX
GPS HD MotionX
Weather Channel
Mercedes Roadside
Gas Buddy
Ethanol-free
Pandora
HiDef Radio
IHeart Radio
so if you have a data plan you'll be good to go.

ipad mini that could snap into place of original command is something i have been thinking about for along time, but all the electronics behind it to make it work is hte hard part. Almost like the ipda becomes the electrical brain for all things media -

It's too tall. You would have to move the controls in front of the cd changer

That looks great, but if I cant get the ipad into the dash, I would just set it on top of the command.

Love your yellow 996 btw

Could a command unit fit in the glove box?

I don't think it will fit in the glove box. Even if it could, you'd have to extend the wire harnesses to reach and somehow the fiber optic MOST ring.

There is about 1-1.5" of room behind the comand. You might be able to set the head unit back if you modify the bracket

does the fiber plug directly in to the command unit? Also I think we would have to cut the sides off the command unit?
