New to the board.. had a question on brief lifter noise on startup ADDED VIDEO

Hi guys. Just picked up an e63 last night and noticed something weird this morning when i started her up.

Right when the engine fires up, i hear what sounds like lifter noise for a second and then disappears. It's a bit concerning but i'm a total stranger when it comes to this engine so I don't know if it's normal or not. Can anybody chime in and tell me if this is normal or not?

Note: When slowly pressing the go pedal at idle, i don't hear any noise that coincides with RPMs.

edit: Here's the youtube link for the video with sound:

07 E63? I may have bad news. Hopefully not as bad as this one.

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...y-lifters.html

Search the C63 forums. Essentially the same engine. Many cam/lifter issues with early 63's among other things like headbolts etc.

Do you have a extended warranty?

thanks for the reply. the noise is only present for a second.. if that on start up. The noise goes away immediately. On the last post on the first page of thread you linked me, he says that its only if the noise is present at all times at any rpm so im inclined to think that my engine doesn't have that problem

im going to do an oil change first thing when i get a chance. I read that if the oil filter isn't on tight it can make lifter noises at start up.

Could be a lifter starting to stick. Get some fresh Mobil 1 and factory filter in there and drive it how it's meant to be driven. It seems like the cars that never see high rpm's have the most issues. Just keep a eye on it and the coolant level. If any issues come up its best to catch it and repair it ASAP. Putting off repairs on a m156 will cost big money later.

Add a couple ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil for 100 miles prior to that oil change.

Noise is typical and considered normal if just directly at startup like that. Nothing to worry about.

Have you dealer check your vin/engine number for the headbolts though. This would be number one on my list to do if I had an early 63. It's alot cheaper before they break! And you dealer may even goodwill the repair.

No lifters on these overhead cam engines but the rockers can be noisy at times. You may want to try an do an oil change and make sure the engine is running the correct mobile one oil weight. Some people may use the wrong weight and cause a lack of lubrication of the cams/rockers at start up.

I'm going to be doing an oil change with 0w-40 tmrw. For the filter i'm guessing everyone is using OEM?
