Looks like in April of '10 my car (previous owner gave me all his records) had the recall for 2009020001 (Fuel Filter Module). Simply states:
025859 - Fuel Level Sensor Check
025860 - Sleeve at Fuel Level Sensor Retrofit
Does that mean mine would be free and clear? I've seemed to get a faint gas smell and curious if it's in my head or should I have the dealer check. Of course I could pull the seat as well. Just curious if back in '10 these items would have fixed the issues.

According to my car's history (previous owner had every single receipt) I got several components replaced under the extended warranty and last year we did the whole 9 yards again. Seems indeed there are no new designs of the ill designed parts. Will see how long the new parts last this time.

Started smelling fuel last week after filling up. Car is an 03 with 107k. Dropped car off on Tuesday 4/12 and got a call today saying it is ready for pickup. When I dropped it off they said VMI stated fuel tank and looking at the invoice they replaced everything. Dealership was Mercedes of Alexandria, they didn't ask any questions, knew right away about the extended warranty and gave me no trouble even though I've never brought the car there for anything.

Dropped mine off today. Parts are on order and work should be done in 5-7 days. They took a look, confirmed and said we will get it taken care of. Works for me.

New tank or not?
Is replacing the tank mandatory in this recall? At first the dealer told me that they would replace the sending units (leaking badly) which they did, and then they would replace the tanks later when they came in. Now they are telling me that my car isn't supposed to get a new tank. WTF?

It's not a recall, it's an extended warranty. Replacing the gas tank is Mercedes own repair guidelines, so if the dealer does not want to follow that you should get it in writing (or pester them to do their own repair correctly).

Lifted up back seat checked passenger side and it is leaking. My car is a 2005 and I replaced pumps @ MB back in 08. Will my car be covered?

Yeah - so about a month ago put the car in the garage for the winter and filled with a full tank of gas.
- One week before I put it away - P0456 - reset it, never came back.
- The next morning the garage reeked of fuel, no drips under the car, smell was coming from the inside. Had the sender replaced in 2012 then the smell was from the outside).
- Spoke to the dealer - they said bring it in.
- Last week took out the kid seat and the rear cushion before dropping it off (figured I'd treat the leather whilst the car was in the shop to get rid of the divots the car seat had made).
- Next day the car is gone, only thing in the garage was the rear cushion. The smell was just as bad, if not worse, than when the car was still there. - Let the cushion sit for 5 days, no change - still reeked. Washing time.
So yeah stripped the leather off and gave the cushion a good 4 hours wash, it still kind of smells like gas - but I think that will dissipate. Its pretty clear from the yellowing/orange areas where gas made contact and absorbed into the foam - how they deny that is beyond me. I took pictures.
I'm going to be really curious as to whether I have to pay the bill on this (CANADA) - I'm thinking yes - but wow wouldn't it be nice if the right thing happens and MB picks up the tab given I have less that 20,000km since the 2012 fix. Only issue I think there is that there are no upgraded parts - they are going to put the same new stuff in and a few years - repeat.
Edit - my car is still in the shop...

Did the Mb dealer in canada honor it or did you have to pay?

Got the call last week that my tank finally arrived. Dropped it off Friday and picked it up yesterday. No more smell. I even got a free tank of gas. I dropped it off as close to empty as possible to save them the trouble of a heavy tank and having to drain all the gas and it was full when I arrived. They gave me a list of all items replaced but I don't have it with me now. Very pleased with the whole situation and how MB handled it here in Richmond.

Had this done as well - My symptom was gas leaking/pooling on the ground in front of the LR wheel, after fill up. Found the MB recall letter and NHTSA docs online and headed to MB Rochester Hills, the local dealer. 3 days later I was told this wasn't covered and was given an estimate for brakes/suspension on top of the $2k fuel repair bill...imagine that. As most of you know, some dealers are completely clueless. Completely.
I called MB Saint Clair Shores and they said "Drop it off, it needs a new tank, pumps, sender, gaskets, etc." Had this repair done in March '15 at MB SCS with no questions asked and at no charge.![bow](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/bowdown.gif)
Also - I had no service history at either dealer, MB SCS was readily willing to help.
The 'recall' is more of a silent warranty extension that extends the entire fuel system coverage (minus lines & injectors) to 15 years from date of manufacture, regardless of mileage or ownership.
Part #211 470 03 00 consists of: 1 passenger side pump assembly, 1 drivers side fuel sender assembly, 1 fuel tank, 2 gasket/O-rings that seal pump & sender to tank. (apologize I don't have ind. component part #'s - they're buried somewhere in this thread)
NOTE: This might not be an issue as of June '16, but in March '15, the fuel tank was out of stock worldwide and took 3+ months for MB SCS to procure.

Took mine in last Thursday and was back on the road Friday! I had taken out the rear seat and cover and physically saw a leak and could smell fuel. When I put the cover back on and seat back in there was no smell.
I decided to take it in anyway as I am not a fan of flammable materials leaking! I told the SA that I smelled fuel when I had the seat out and would like the tank and pumps replaced under warranty.
SA gave me a loaner and had the tanks delivered the next day. They washed the car, filled it full of fuel, and in general made me feel like I had just bought an AMG GT.
There is something to be said for that type of service. In the past we have always looked over Mercedes due to cost but we will certainly be looking at them in the future.

Complains about cost usually come from people who can't afford their car in the first place, regardless of make and model. Although there is nothing wrong with saving money but if one decides to go with a make that the world knows is an expensive one to get as well as to keep up shouldn't complain.

You spend your money your way and I promise not to tell you how to spend it. I will spend mine the way I see fit.

Apologies, the printed word is difficult to decipher. I do see a lot of people make the mistake of not providing for the care and upkeep of this type of car.

However, you would not be benefiting from this "outstanding customer service" if it was not for the previous 5+ years of combined hard work by so many members of this forum who relentlessly pursued an obstinate MB USA who, with full knowledge of the defect, continued to deny the existence of any defect and responsibility to the last.

Dealer replaced the tank, senders etc, and now I am getting a P0456 code. They are blaming the ECU and stating that it needs an update. Can anyone confirm if this could be accurate? Personally I think they can't find the leak and are blaming something else.

evaporative emissions system small leak detected.
Test that your tank is sealed. I'd start with th filler cap. If not let them figure it out. They are the "experts". Thy get paid by MBUSA not you. No need for an ECU update. That's for sure.
