I had the same problem, except mine was a major evap leak that started after the dealer replaced fuel pumps. Dealer could not get the repair done under warranty (despite that it's part of the fuel system), and MBUsa refused to Goodwill the repair.

Paid $500 out of my pocket to replace an evap purge valve, and cross my fingers it's now fixed.

So they checked the charcoal cannister and purge valve and state all is good. They ran a fuel leak test in DAS and it states to clear the fault code and update the control module.

This SA seems to think they need to reprogram the ECU...

If they would know what they're doing thy wouldn't tell you "we think...". Or maybe they should simply do it. See what the changes will do. Maybe they have to think about what to think while they think. What do mechanics learn nowadays? How to change oil and how to replace good control modules and charge the customer. That's what they learn. I wish you good luck. Hopefully they figure it out while thinking...

Which control module did they say needs updating? The ECU does handle a lot of emission functions, but updating it to fix a recurring evap error makes no sense.

If ECU (I assume we talk about ME) would require an update, the update would be available on the SD and it would actually recommend it to the mechanic. So again, "we think", would be out of the question. If it needs settings to be changed is a different story. But even then, WIS or any bulletins from MB would clarify this question for the mechanic. Back to the question: what do they know about their trait?

This is why they "think" they had to update the ECU, which they did.

Problem solved?

Picture confirms what I said. Their SD would tell them if there is an update necessary. Again. No need to think. The machine did it for them

Must be an Indy shop, right? SD looks like it at least.

So far so good. Not an independent shop, a certain undefeated boxer buys his Merc's there.

Fortunately I didn't pay a dime, I would have taken it to a reputable indy shop that specializes before losing an arm and a leg at the dealership.

W211 E55 Estate, W210 E320 Estate
Thank you for this post!!!!!

I was just about to read up on replacing the oil in my supercharger and stumbled across this thread. Literally this week I had filled up my E55 Estate and both my wife and I said after we run an errand and got back in the car.... "Don't you smell gas???"

Time for a trip to the dealership armed with all of your documentation.

THANK YOU!!!

2007 e550
2007 E550 with 81K miles.

Started smelling fuel about a month ago on fill ups. Saw this thread and dropped off my car at Penski Mercedes in West Covina CA. They knew exactly what it was and said it should be covered under the new extended 15 year warranty. They even gave me a loaner vehicle for free! Car was fixed the next day and they stated the entire gas tank had to be replaced. Awesome customer service over there!

Thanks guys for all the info!!!

2004 Mercedes E55 AMG
I started noticing a petrochemical smell three weeks ago, but thought (since it was outside the car) that it might be fluids on the surface of the parking areas that I use. Turns out that it was the fuel tank on my 2004 E55 AMG (with RennTech performance package R1 which includes Hand Held Tuner ECU Upgrade and crankshaft pulley, higher efficiency intercooler pump).

I had not noticed this thread on previous visits, and it has been too long since I visited the forum. After my fabulous indy mechanic spotted the problem, I went to this forum and found amazing resource info. Thanks to everyone who posted above.

The dealership is replacing the tank tomorrow at no charge. They said that they barely smelled odor of gas inside the car (I agree) and that it was unlikely that the foam in the seat ($300.00 price quoted to replace it) would need to be replaced. They said that Mercedes would not cover the cost of foam replacement even if it had been contaminated because of the fuel tank leak.

The service manager also said that there have been zero fires reported to Mercedes as a result of the fuel tank leaks. He also said that some of the failed tank systems have literally squirted fuel into the seat foam on some vehicles and that it had caused some short term health issues for some people.

Good that the $2,800.00 typical charge for a new tank is covered by the extension of the warranty to 15 years, because I had just (today) replaced the supercharger pump, replaced the motor mounts (front and under the transmission-$1,100.00), had a transmission service with a new filter and 13 quarts of transmission fluid, had the visors on both sides re-glued (total cost of $45.00 instead of $400.00 apiece for replacements at the dealership price), and had a $1,850.00 replacement of the system that controls brake operations (mainly under difficult road conditions, I was told). It is fortunate that I LOVE this car, because $4,100 out of pocket plus rental car costs was painful. ;-)

Noticed a couple of fill ups ago my car was making the garage smell like gas. My roommate works at an MB/BMW shop and called up the local dealer (who I bought the car from) and told them what was up after checking it out. They said they're going to warranty it for me. Got to swing by one day next week and set up a time to get this done.

It also nice that one of their techs used to work at the dealership. He said to request certain people to work on the car as they usually pawn off warranty work on the new guys. The car isn't a DD, so I'm fine with leaving it for longer if necessary.

Yes call MB USA, and if they don't help then contact NHTSA.

The extended warranty should cover the second replacement.

Perhaps since you got a replacement tank as soon as the warranty was extended, you got some older part revisions that still fail?

Mine has a slight leak when tank filled and parked over night .... sometimes.Problem is I have aftermarket fuel pumps and return style system now. Return fitting drilled right near the drive sender. This will not go over very well with the dealer. I may have to buy /repair this tank myself.Anyone run into this issue? That I have created !! LOL

My 2006 has been at the dealer for two full weeks. They have agreed to replace the tank and pumps under warranty, and I'm driving a loaner. They didn't get all the parts from Germany, however. They say some grommets are missing, and they are waiting for those to complete the repair. Nice loaner.

one car at a time
I had mine replaced yesterday and am crossing my fingers. I need to do some logging and make sure the car is running ok. A few spirited runs did not feel as strong as I had remembered.

Does this cover any fuel leaks or only the fuel tanks? Mine already got replaced but I am getting a bad fuel smell in the engine bay towards the back of the engine on the passenger side.

only fuel tank components. You probably need the fuel rail damper o ring.
