When I had a 180 crank pulley it would pull hard to about 100mph and then you could feel it fall flat as intake temps would just be to high. This was in warmer weather, when it is cold outside which isn't very often in Florida the car felt like a monster. But going back to the same issue with the supercharger pulley, from anything below 45mph or so like taking off from a slow roll you are just fighting traction control until you finally feel the car give it all the power and it plant you in the seat. And that was with 20" wheels with a 285 wide Pilot Super Sport tire too, so there was good tire and width back there.

There have been guys trap around 122 on stock pullies with just long tube headers and a throttle body.

Having posted earlier in this thread that I had considered making a scattershield for the AMG55 to protect the surrounding engine components in the event of a failure like David had here ... and then subsequently being contacted by several members who wanted one, I went ahead and made a proto that i am happy with.

Not wanting to hijack this thread anymore than I may have already, I created a thread for this Safety Item https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...ml#post6306976

Again David, sorry to see all the damage you incurred. You are good guy (I'm still enjoying the valvebody you gave me a great deal on) and it sucks when bad things happen to good people. Speaking of being a good guy, pretty stand-up of you to encourage others not to throw stones at vendors (we have a good bunch of vendors here, that is for sure).

Cheers,
Chris

p.s. here is pic of the scattershield I finished this morning

No way In hell I would purchase an aftermarket pully that has the potential to destroy multiple other components in due time from a poor design... These are all ticking time bombs, would recommend getting them off before the inevitable happens. And then get your money back... Not a solution to buy a shield for future shrapnel. Very unfortunate to hear about these terrible occurrences.

This was a 'supposedly' stock pulley

Yeah, I did get a little rough with it....This IS a 500hp car. But, since I do have to replace it, why not something a little hot? Any and all suggestions welcome.

I put my stock pulley back on even though I had no issues after 15k miles.

Comparing them side by side, the stock pulley has thicker spring steel and a slightly gold hue (whatever that means)

lol...appears quite a few people have had SC pulley blowouts. My opinion...if it's your product and it fails (10 miles or 1,000 miles) and it was supposed to last 100,000. Refund the part and cover the damages to the customers vehicle. That is the main reason why somebody will never ever get my business again.

Exactly, it is my understanding that the EC ones are made in China, and UPD's ones are made here in the USA.

Correct me if I am wrong.

So with all this, who actually makes good clutched pulleys? Anyone? Better to go with a SC pulley or crank pulley?

At this point I would recommend a proven crank pulley and stay far away from an SC pulley

So I had this EXACT same failure last year. The pulley I had (supposedly a eurocharged one but honestly have no way of knowing the authenticity of that at all) turned itself into a chop saw. Luckily, it only scratched up the theromstat housing and chopped up the same hoses and my shroud.\.

With my car being tuned and only having belts for the 84mm pulley, I called up UPD and got another one overnighted to get the car back on the road. Upon receipt I immediately noticed the UPD one was heavier. Closer inspection to what was left of my old one and the new UPD one revealed beefier springs and a thicker magneto plate.

I'm about to upgrade more than a few things, and one of them is to include a FSP I also bought from UPD.

Wow...I didn't know they were different manufacturers!

FWIW my UPD SC pulley from BIP has been great!

It was my understanding that all of the smaller supercharger pulleys were designed by UPD, and manufactured by ASP.

I can't say that they are or aren't. But I can say that there really are different versions of the pulley out there that when put side by side are not the same.

The differences are subtle enough that you won't necessarily catch them without closeup pics. But again, and I can't stress this enough, I unfortunately have no means of knowing if my first pulley was a knockoff or if it was an earlier design.

There have been at least three different versions of the supercharger pulley, all of them designed by UPD and manufactured by ASP.

Sorry to revive an old thread. I'm sorry for your loss with this pulley malfunction. I am a little nervous putting the new 77mm clutched pulley on the beast now. Does anyone know if this problem will occur with the 77mm clutched pulley, also is there anything I can do to prevent this failure before putting the new pulley in the car?

This pulley just created THOUSANDS of dollars in damage to my vehicle. I'm so upset at all the complaints being seen on the forums and obviously the problem is the weak bars being used not as strong as OEM. Why hasn't this been fixed? Who's going to give me the money to fix a poorly designed product that destroyed my car and supercharger housing. This is just terrible and I feel sick to my stomach with the pain and agony it is causing me. I don't want tomorrow to come which is when I find out how much its going to be to fix everything else it shredded up. Terrible... just terrible.

^^^ No one isn't going to pay for it besides your wallet. These are aftermarket parts and everyone is taking a gamble. There are probably 1 out of 25 pulleys that have these issues. You might be able to get a replacement pulley at least from the place you bought if it was from the infamous first batch of pulleys.

I feel kind of sick looking at it since your car is clean but gotta pay to play the AMG game.

Well that really sucks, its a shame they were made like that in the first place without proper R&D and making sure its made to last. It was made by Shardul. One thing I will say I've never gotten a faster response and he already has agreed to replace it. Kudos to him for excellent customer service in remedying the situation. But I'm still left with thousands in damages which makes me scared to even put this pulley back in the car?!
