Did oil change on my E55 now its smoking like a ***** !

had the car for 6000 miles, did an oil change today, put synthetic 10/40 in it ( lucas ) and some Nulon additive, now it smokes like crazy on idle.
Did I miss something ?
I checked oil level with the dipstick and it is perfect, also the dash says level is good.

Mainly it is on idle, driving not so bad.

Maybe the previous owner had special oil in it ? over the last 6000 miles I have had to add 3 quarts to it and it never smoked ??
I wouldn't have though an oil change is that complicated ?

Did oil filter as well, K & N

Why? Was it low to begin with or it was consuming that much in 6k miles?

A quart every 2k seams high bro. Any visible leaks around the motor? Drain bolts, valve covers or head gasket area?

nah no visible oil leaks, it's done about 90,000 miles.
running around 14 pounds boost.( not stock )
oil consumption doesn't bother me that much, but this new smoke does !
Maybe the previous owner had some magic no smoke oil in it ?
only other thing was when I put the oil in the motor I poured it in through the oil filter opening, didn't think it would matter ?

You're right, that shouldn't matter. It's probably the additive then.

My sensor was playing up once and indicated the oil was too low when it was actually overfull. She started smoking like a chimney - thankfully no damage done although it made me panic at the time.

At any rate are you sure you completely drained before adding new oil? Keep in mind there are 2 drain plugs that require removal. If you're sure it was drained correctly then it should have needed about 8.5 liters replaced.

i did forget the second drain, only did the rear one.
however I checked the level with the dipstick, and was actually a bit low, same with the electronic reading also a bit low.
as i went in a bit low and then topped it up, it is now perfect level and still does it i think.
may drain it all tomorrow and go 0-40 oil

Yeah in Melbourne you probably want to stick with 0W-40 or 5W-40 only use 10W-40 in warmer climates. The 10W-40 you've been using will deteriorate quicker in the cold which is all the more reason to stop topping up and go all new oil. It's probably sludge in there, you're just contaminating when adding. Make sure you stick with Mercedes spec as these motors are fussy.

+1 on the 0W-40

Truth is you may have broken piston lands, time for a compression test and or leak down test. The M113K should go 12,000 miles with less than quart of oil burn off.

Sorry to say you (previous owner) may have had (put) magic oil in that engine for the last 6000 miles.

I doubt it has a broken piston land as it was fine this morning ( before oil change )
ok yes it used some oil, but didn't blow smoke.
only after the oil change, did this happen.
The previous owner may have had magic oil in it, but I doubt it, as I had topped it up 3 times and it never puffed any.
Only after I put MY magic oil in it , did this happen !

Tomorrow I will drain it from both plugs and put new 0-40 full synthetic in it, wish me luck !

not sure i put a bottle and a half, and then topped it up as i read the dipstick and confirmed it on the dash display.
I did put a bottle of nulon PTFE additive in it, guess that also wasn't a good idea !

Snake oils are never a good idea. Ever wonder why no manufacturer recommends them? The only reason they're sold is because people buy them.

"A bottle and a half".....are these quart bottles, 5 qt bottles, soda cans?

Why would you not just put in what the owner's manual calls for and be done with it? If you overfilled the motor, that could be causing your smoking.

I have said many times that the level is okay as I have checked it with the dipstick and the dash display.
So I don't see how it is over full. instead of just adding an amount that the internet tells me I actually check it.

As others have said, these cars are picky on oil. Mine is a 6.3, but likes Mobil 1 0W-40 and at over 100k burns about 1 quart between 8k mile oil changes. I'd def check for leaks, and most additives suck. The only things I use are Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank every 15k miles or so, and thats it.

Drain everything out and start fresh with no additive. Make sure you use the oem mb oil filter.

Every month and a half, when you were checking the oil level with the dipstick, then adding oil, was it while the car was warm or cold?

Owner's manual = internet hearsay?

What makes you think that? Because it says K&N?

Yes I did think that the K&N filter would have been good quality as it is a reputable brand.

I let the car sit for 10 minutes engine off to check the level.
Also the smoke was when it was low, 150mm on the dipstick.

Well I started it this morning, no smoke.

However I replaced the oil anyway with 5/40 and no additives and is now fine.
No wonder these cost so much to service you gotta change the oil twice !!

Thanks for all your help.

You don't really have to change the oil twice. Just use the correct oil the first time without any additives and you should be ok.
