Smoke on Startup or Motor Swap Time

You pick the name that's more appropriate

This is after sitting for a while… time shouldn’t really matterbut I am trying to get as much info as possible before I do a swap or whatever ifigure out…

I broke this away from the original thread because it is going away from Valve Stems guides / seals tojust a major engine issue… like oil control rings or a broken ring.. Original Thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/571517-valve-stem-seal-replacement-cost.html

The shop I had it at took a look at startup and basicallysaid, we can leakdown and comp test it but that is money you should probablyspend on the motor I have been looking at… and I agree, I can do the leak downat the house and I really think a bore scope is going to tell more- so I amsourcing one that I can actually see with vs a crappy cheap one I will regretbuying/ using.

Anyone in the Atlanta area want to help swap a motor!!!! I havemy eye on one that I will be doing a leakdown on before buying (Ha Ha- learnedthat one once!) and change some seals on while im there…. I am getting 2K-ishquotes for swapping and I can get a little coin if I part my motor outafterward.

Just trying not to get too far into this car and selling itto someone just isn’t my style. Karma comes back, but somehow I keep gettingscrewed!

Just looking for any pratical advice if someone has dealtwith the same or has some insight into removal/ swap processes/issues!

Thanks everyone and I love the car even if it smokes alittle….

Are you losing coolant? Check your head gasket

It's oil- it looks pure white on the video, but it's blueish and smells of oil... Losing oil too, not coolant... I couldn't be so lucky!

Have you checked the oil...is there too much in the motor? I had an oil change done and when I picked it up it was smoking like crazy, they drained a half qt out and it went away, never happened again....just a thought

powerwise it is still a scalded dog- its still fast... and the smoke goes away, then only slightly on restart... a lot like what valve guide seals would look like....

no change with oil level... I just had to add a quart and still doing the same thing.

thanks for the input guys! keep it coming!

Compression test should be easy enough with a good gauge without doing the leak down to give you an idea

True but at least you can find out the pressure in the cylinders now

Ive seen that before on my friends CLS55… But, yours is worse then his was. It turned out to be worn out rings. You also say that you have oil consumption. It's safe to say your motor needs a rebuild or swap it out.

GL and sorry to hear this happened.

unfortunately I have to agree... anyone have any tips on the swap? anything I should look out for (other than do some gaskets while I have the new motor sitting there) thanks!

Do the rear main seal for sure. That would be the hardest to do later and costly for labor. Other then that, run a few quarts of new oil through the oil filter lines to clear out some old gunk in the oil cooler before installing new motor. Spark plugs are not a bad idea. Other then that you should be fine.

I'd say just keep running it while you build a motor on the side. Not sure if that's your thing but it's what I would do. As far as the problem goes that's alot of oil burn, unfortunately I would bet more towards the rings. Is it an early 2003 by chance?

its an 04 and I agree, I was thinking about that but I really am trying hard to not just shovel money at this first thing... I have been shopping for some cams - if I do the swap instead of paying 2k for a shop to do it, it would soften the blow for sure.... I was also thinking of building the old motor on my time after the swap over the next year..
yes, I am a glutton for punishment!

I am up in Dunwoody.... I have beer of your liking and I think 2000ujtz (or whatever his landcruiser designation is!) is going to help too. I'm not looking forward to it but it will free up some mod money....

So I lost cyl 6 today... Pulled the plugs to test compression and leakdown... Here is what I found:
Plug 1
Smoke on Startup or Motor Swap Time-image_1.jpg

Plug 2
Smoke on Startup or Motor Swap Time-image_2.jpg

Plug from 5 looked prefect...
So it pulled around 135% on comp and cyl 5 pulled 145 for comparison... I'm thinking it is getting enough oil in the cylinder to do this so it doesn't really matter if it is rings or guide- it's bad either way......

Thats really bad, Lost completely I assume? Both plugs look the same? Any luck with the boroscope? I have some very light oil consumption and am wondering what the best thing to do is.

That's a little more than you want. Usually it's 1 quart every 3000 depending how hard you drive it

Funny you should bring this up today. Just got done taking the motor out to swap in a better one. We didn't do a lot of poking around but when we took off the oil pans you could definantly see some scoring on the #6 cyl wall. Once I get don't with the swap- I will do more investigating into the "why" this happened, but at first glance I am going to have to say oil control ring broke.
I'll load some pics too- i am fortunate enough to have someone helping that knows what he is doing- that's a huge plus!
1/2 way done with the swap as I am putting in an S55 motor so there is a lot of not common stuff... But I was resealing everything anyway so it had to come done to long block regardless.
Lots of work, but less with the right guidance!
