2004 e55 oil change issue.

My boss had me change the oil in his 2004 e55. Got everything buttoned up (But had NOT added oil) and noticed the amount of oil drained seemed way low. It looks like about a gallon was drained out. I then went and checked on the dash and it said I was 2 quarts low. I am confused as to what is going on here. The car should hold 9 quarts of oil.

If needed I can measure the exact amount that came out.

I also noticed some oil back in the transmission area that made me suspicious.

There was no reason other than high miles to change the oil. No warnings or the like.

Edit: This was drained by taking the bolt out of the pan.

These cars burn oil. It's not uncommon to loose a quart or two between oil changes. The oil near the transmission is probably the rear main seal leaking, that is also where some of the oil went.

Car free at the moment
There are two oil drain bolts on the E55. One in front of the crossmember (on the drivers' side IIRC) and a second behind the crossmember facing the rear of the car. Sounds like you drained only one of the two.

That might explain it. I only pulled one drain bolt. Sounds like the front one.

Well time to go pull off that annoying underpanel again. Thanks for the help.

Make sure you replace the drain plugs & copper washers. I didn't & despite a little bit of thread sealant, I still got small leaks. I went & bought a whole whack of washers & drain plugs for the future.

... You have to replace the drain plugs when changing the oil? I could see the washers if they are crush style but the plugs them selves? Only Mercedes...

You could be right on the drain plug, I recall reading a thread where there was some debate. For the cost, I figured why not...

The M113K drain plugs have a sealant on the threads which is why they are to be replaced. It's the only engine Benz has like this.
