E60 M5: 0-60 mph in 3.95 seconds

he said it had a 8500+redline, its smg shifter faster then the m3's, and that his car didnt have a restrictor and he had gone 185 mph and had room to go. He said our tests proved that the car does 0-60 in 3.95 seconds

been chasing that car for 4 months
I have been chasing that M5 (and two black test mules as well) for a while now. I drive their canyon test route several times a week and the M5 is a serious car.
Last night I ran across it in Sherman Oaks CA being followed by 2 545i's. When I taunted the driver at a stop light, he reved the motor and took off. I knew there were cops up the street (having just left a coldstones up the street 10 min ago) so I did not chase him down. But I can say the M5 does not sound impressive. Take the M3's chain saw exhaust note and add 4 more cylinders to that...and you have the M5. The AMG V8's sound great while the M5 sounds ricer like. Car sure can move though...and I know from being smoked in my E500 (E55 was at home resting).
I need to get my car "de-limited" and then go follow those M5 testers out to their desert test loop some day. Id love to blow past an M5 going 155 when I am going 170 -- Sounds rather risky to me however.
The E55k did manage to take care of the 2006 Cayenne Turbo test mule last week when I chased down a pack of 2005-2006 Boxter test cars! That Cayenne drives TOO well for a truck ... its not very slow either! Power increase for 2006? Maybe !!

Where are the SMG shift paddles? I can see the M-car shifter in the center console, but the paddles seem to be missing from the steering wheel.

I highly doubt there will be 3.95 sec 0-60 mph in hte productioon M5.

maybe its too late for me to think clearly...
but I am missing your point here...
But I do agree that there is no way the M5 will do 0-60 in 3.95 seconds. It does not have enough tq nor the power to get it going that quickly. I still think the E55 will beat it in a straight line but when the road turns....watch out E55...M5 just checked out
FYI bmw does not sell cars with a removed speed limiter so I dont think us spec cars will go 185 either. BMW does not do ultra high-speed testing like AMG does. But then again AMG wont de-limit an US spec car either.

Not enough power?? What are you talking about?? It has a 500 hp V10 engine. Yes, its torque is lower than the E55's but I read a review somewhere where they said that the E39 M5's torque was at the optimum amount. That was why did not increase the torque much for the E60 M5. It also has a 7-speed SMG III transmission.
Look at the E55, it has traction problems big time. Plus, as you said, the E60 M5 will rape the E55 handling wise.

BMW's lustre has worn off
Wouldn't it be interesting if we could get 285's on the back of our cars? I wonder if those tires and the gearing will compensate for the low torque? I'm number 1 on the list for the new m5 but I have serious reservations starting with the torque, the new smg and how it works in automatic mode for stop and go traffic, appearance, build quality - interior especially and reliability. I'm thrilled with my E55 only my second MB after several BMW's and what I want to know are the numbers from 70 to 120 mph. I love the smoothness of the car and lack of drama until you go WOT. If I want drama I'll drive my wife's corvette. I've supplemented the sound system with a JL subwoofer and it's fantastic. It's going to take a lot to pry me out of the E55 and into another BMW product.
I've driven the 645i and was not impressed. BMW seems to be still living off an early 90's yuppie image and the competition has not only caught up but is passing this brand. Kain, the Village People aren't going to make a comeback and either is BMW unless they make some serious product changes especially in terms of quality and reliability but thanks for your input.

As for the claims of 3.95 to 60? Fat chance...no 996 TT cound do that so there is NO chance an M5 will. 370 ft/lb of tq will not make the car a 3.95 second car. The E55 has 500 hp but 516 ft/lb of tq. Something tells me the E55 will "out drag" the E60 M5.
But yes when the road turns...bye bye E55. I know this first hand!
But also the test drivers for those M5's are not on the inside loop and do not have access to factory info. They are only paid to drive those cars hard and try to make them fail. Where do I sign up?

I love how everyone says the E55 will win in a straight line & then in the corners "bye bye E55". I can assure you that 99% of the E55 & M5 owners will not be bringing their cars to the track. So what the hell difference does this make? Both cars are good for their certain purpose. On the streets both cars have more than enough power and handling than necessary. What it boils down to is which one suits you more. In a real street race, the odds that the E55 will win in a race from a stoplight or highway roll are very great considering it will take almost a professional driver to match the shifting necessary to beat the E55. However, I don't think that really matters in the long run because how often are these two cars going to randomly meet on the road? Not very frequently.

kain, you should try stop making enimies in other boards and remain in your BMW forums. i am avid at e46fanatics too, and until you start driving and appreciating cars for what they are, I'm sure you'll never understand the beauty of german engineering (I work for a german company as an engineer). What you hear in magazines and one sided stories make up your "information" . Maybe you've rode in some cars. Please. I rode in a 94 mustang gt convertible years ago, and I thought that was God's gift to automobiles. Experience does count.
I will take offense to your comments, because I love BOTH cars (and own them). Perhaps you don't take offense to anybody's comments cause you don't have a car? I can't wait until you'll be humbled by a MB when you get your 3 series. Perhaps then you'll understand that although BMW's are amazing cars, not every other car is dog sh*t.
Write that down.

Owning a new BMW 5 series would be like having a boy/girlfriend who is really ugly but great in bed. You can't spend all your time making love and sooner or later you have to look at them.......
