Question as a newbie MB and E55 owner (2006). Did you drop the car off because of SBC and fuel tank issues to begin with or just getting MB to replace?

It doesn't matter. If you have the fuel smell inside the car drop it off and get it fixed. The SBC has to have one or more of the listed issues in order for you to take advantage of the extended warranty. They don't just replace a good SBC unit because of the letter. Might help to read it first.

Got my letter today (2 1/2 years too late).

MB says warranty extends to 25 years with unlimited mileage to ANY owner (1st, 2nd, 3rd) of the following cars
E Class 2003-2006
CLS class 2006
SL class 2003-2012
Maybach 2004-2012
SLR class 2005-2009

Warranty covers SBC/electro-hydraulic brake components
Hydraulic control unit, hydraulic pump, pressure reservoir, brake operating unit, f/r wheel speed sensors, brake lamp switch, yaw rate sensor.

If, like me, you have had to pay out of pocket to fix ANY of those items, Mercedes Benz will reimburse you. You need to take the car and any/all paperwork bills showing you paid for the repair to a local Mercedes dealership for inspection. They will forward the paperwork to MB to process a check. MB states 4-6 weeks time to process.

In my case, my car was 43 days out of factory warranty at the time I got the red screen of death. MB refused to cover it. I was out over $1800 for a new SBC and installation/programming. Hoping I will see some of that back

Hope this may help some of you either get some money back or at least know that if you have a problem in the future, it's now covered by the extended warranty

Exactly, people don't understand the term "warranty extension". It's covered if it fails. Not just because you want to replace it.

I got mine back today they didn’t replace mine due to the fact they went through all the steps and nothing showed the sbc failing or it’s about to fail. Even though i reset it they said doesnt matter sbc unit runs perfectly normal and has zero issues. They changed my stop lamp switch and fluid and called it a day.

The reset procedure is stored inside the shadow memory. You might have void your extended warranty by doing this. Even if they cover it at first, once the unit goes back to MB/Bosch they will do their own testing of the unit and the shadow memory is part of it.

Yeah pretty sure the count and subsequent warnings is to get you to bring it in for a technician to look over the system, ensure its healthy and begin the count again. AFAIK once the count has occured so many times it will need replacing not reset.

I was honest with mbusa and dealer told them it was reseted but they mentioned nothing about voided warranty. Even one of the managers there at mbusa. I even spoke to service manager and administrator and nothing mentioned my warranty is voided due to the reset. So maybe they are all not aware of it getting voided after reset or doesnt exist because they continued to work on the car. Either way they had the car for almost 2 weeks and they did everything they can to find some sort of fault and they couldn’t.

I kinda doubt that a dealer will do anything that leaves their butt hanging out in the wind.
There was in fact a software reflash recall for these cars years ago, and there was a Mercedes corporate mandated mod to the grounding system of the SBC as well. It's possible that some cars haven't had that yet.

It seems like some here just don’t understand the inner workings of MB(USA). Don’t spread false information since these threads are being used as information for people who have to fight for their rights when MB dealerships don’t know their own SOPs and such.

i can only recommend DO NOT RESET YOUR SBC if you want to take advantage of the extended warranty.

You are probably right, still, dealers are sometimes crooked and not very smart in my experience. I'd be wanting to know the count if it was my car.

FWIW I contacted MBUSA and they said reimbursement claims must go through the service manager at your local dealership. So that's going to be fun.

So was mine on the fuel tank replacement. Different parts, same procedure. Two weeks later we received a check from MB somewhere in Texas.

My tank was leaking on my E63 and it never smelled inside the car. The only time it would smell was just after filling it up and parking it in the garage. When you'd come back out it would smell like gas. My local dealer replaced the tank under the extended warranty. My indy guy had confirmed that it was leaking and called the dealer to let them know I'd be bringing the car by.

Official Letter & Warranty Placard for 25 year extension, Original 10 year Extension letter to NHTSA (which was actually 15 years if you read the service bulletin - they just didn't tell anyone), and the official 2015 Mercedes Service Bulletin. I've always found it easier to argue with dealer idiots by producing this type of legal documentation when informing them certain items are under warranty. They can't dismiss it. Just print it out and bring it in. You won't be reimbursed for replacements done outside of warranty without a significant amount of grief, given their requirement of diagnosing it themselves (so I've heard).

25 Year SBC Warranty confirmed

Hi All,

This situation is a pet peeve of mine. I received a letter from MB yesterday stating that the SBC warranty is not 25 Year/unlimited miles. It also stated that you should take the car to a MB dealer to make the repair. In the case you have had the work done at other than a MB dealer you can submit for reimbursement and they may/may not reimburse you for the repair. In my case I used a independent that when the work was done he interfaced with MB in Germany to set up/program the SBC. I am hoping this shop is MB approved. I plan on sending my claim in for reimbursement in the next 30 days and will post the results when I hear back from MB.

Spread the word as there are many of us who had this repair made with our own dime...
