229.5 vs 229.51

do anyone know the difference in these oils, as to how they pertain to the M157

my understanding was that 5 w 40 espM was ok for these engines but the back of the mobil 1 bottle says its can be used for 229.51 mercedes

i was looking inthe manual and it says that the M157 should only have 0w40 229.5

im not really much of an oil expert, so was just wondering if anyone out here can explain. thanks

If you put the 229.51 you will have to upgrade software to latest beta version otherwise you will get a blue screen with "car engine stopped responding - must restart now - click OK to continue or cancel to get towing right away"...

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
From a recent heavy discussion on a C63 thread on this topic (again), the only debate is for the M156 engine. For all other AMG engines, everyone pretty much agrees 0W40 is the one to use.

I spent some time trying to figure out all the different oils this year. I wanted to see if 229.3 oils were OK for AMG turbo engines, as long as I did frequent oil changes. I think they might be, but looking at all the specs I couldn't find out for sure. Nobody would say yes, but I couldn't see any reason why they shouldn't. From what I recall the latest and greatest oils aren't used for improved engine protection so much as extended service intervals, low emissions and compatibility with diesel particulate filters. AMG's definitely need 0W-40 oils though; 30W oils don't meet AMG's high temperature sheer strength requirements.

Q: why is 0w50 not recommended for street use?

A:It's not the weight that's the issue but the high level of ZDDP. ZDDP can ruin catylitic converters.

Was wondering about the 0W50 oil. Here is what I found in the interweb

229.5 is the spec for gas engines and there are a lot of different manufactures and weights that meet this spec. 229.51 is the spec for diesel engines with DPFs. 0w40 and 5w40 formula M both meet 229.5 spec and can be used in M156 engine. I'd post pics of WIS showing this but my work computer wont allow me to.
