Rear Air Springs

This article is a few years old, but it's interesting seeing as the rear air spring seems to go out on these cars early on. I've got the tools and know-how to do it, so if it's legitimately a step above OEM, I might just do this preemptively so I don't end up with a saggy rear end!

July 23,2015
"Arnott Inc. has introduced aftermarket right rear and left rear air springs for several Mercedes-Benz E-Class models....Arnott says its new aftermarket rear air springs replace the OE air springs and feature a new multi-ply Continental ContiTech air spring bladder, German-made crimping rings, custom-designed, high-impact resin top mount and bottom piston, a 4 mm air fitting, and an air spring dust boot to protect the assembly from debris."

Is Arnott the make/model of air spring the dealer would use as a replacement?

Also, at ~$200 per side, that's quite reasonable.

And, is it really this easy to replace them???

Replaced the ones on my E55 and those were much improved over OEM.

You replaced them with the Arnott brand?

And they "were much improved over OEM" how? Air holding capacity? Ride quality? Durability?

Yep, the Arnotts. I can't say the ride quality was much different since the rears are just air springs and separate from the struts but the overall quality and design (and warranty) were much better.

Your dealer will want to replace both of the O.E. rear air springs with MB springs and reservoir which requires about 8 hours of labor (which is why tey repalce both) since they have to remove most of the rear end to get to the reservoir. The Arnott Air Springs use a longer piston so it doesn't need the reservoir but you will need to replace both at the same time. This can save over 90% of the installation time! https://www.arnottindustries.com/par...18_pid134.html

i did all for corners on my e55 myself with arnotts and never had an issue with my airmatic again

i did the rears at the same time, but the fronts i only did one at a time when the old oem ones failed at different times
