New Girodisc rotors and pads with pics!

I finally pulled the trigger on new rotors and pads up front after some research. I decided the Girodisc rotors with Magic Pads from Competition Motorsport.

I track my car a bit and was seeing some fatigue in the original rotors. My install mileage was 35,300 on a nicely modded car. I had just changed pads (Porterfield) last year, but now I guess I have an extra set of pads with about 70% life on them! (And a brand new set still in the box for the rears if anyone is interested...UPDATE - Can't find these, but will put them up cheap when I stumble across them!).

The ordering process was a snap. I talked to Pete at Competition and he even gave me a sweet discount for being a forum member. Online confirmation came that day and I got updates on the order status via email.

A few days later two very well packaged boxes arrived at my office and I was very pleased with how much care they took to make sure they survived the transit and especially how well the instructions were laid-out. Each disc clearly has the FL or FR on the box and one or both of the discs even had a tag attached to the rotor itself that showed the side it belongs to. The discs were boxed and also wrapped inside the box in heavy plastic. There was spacer cardboard between the two rotor boxes as well. Full install sheet with lots of warnings about not touching the bolts on the hats, etc. My shop (Sports Car Repair in Houston) had no issues with the install. One of my favorite things about these is the hat that covers that rusty hub at the end of the axle. It looks so much better and it looks like such a well thought-out system now. Even my wife gave them some props, said they looked great. I don't miss my drilled rotors at all anymore, this is a great improvement over stock.

The rotors themselves are larger than the stock ones, more surface area is obvious. The pads have been quiet and I had to test them out this weekend on a 500 mile round trip to the hill country during a panic stop in traffic from about 40 mph. No issues, just grabbed like crazy. Can't wait to get them out to Circuit of the Americas.

Anyway, these are a nice option to have and I'll report back on track day performance as my car touches 150 mph on the back straight at COTA....that is a lot of weight to slow down and I have to admit the stock brakes did a good job. If these are better I may be able to late brake just a bit more.

Competition Motorsport will offer anyone the same discount if you just mention you read this post on MBWorld.

FYI and thanks!

John, your new brakes look great and sound like they work really well. We think you'll love them at COTA, especially turn 12! We've had nothing but great feedback on Girodisc for both street and track use -- it's what we use on all of our race cars. For anyone looking to upgrade their Merc's brakes (or anything else related to track days and racing), stop by our website or give us a call. We offer discounts for forum members and enjoy helping anyone trying to sort out what works for their intended application.

I got the "magic" pads over the SS because I don't road course and I can say the dust is significantly less than OEM.

Hey M-Theory, I'd have to say I agree with you, so far they have not shown hardly any dust. That is a real plus.

Thanks!

I'm sure the gyrodisc ones are better and lighter weight than the stock ones even. However, I like the drilled rotor look so much lol

great post, so what is it about girodisc that gives them an advantage over the brembo amg oe discs....i m just wondering what the story is with these, as i am probably near the time to get new discs....mine are at 55000 miles and seem fine, so far.....i had pads changed on all 4 at 40000 miles so far from dealer

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
If I were you, I would go aftermarket and use GiroDisc or RB instead of the oem Brembo after the oem ones wear out. I called GiroDisc last year and spoke to couple of individuals there and they seemed really easy to work with. I'm sure it's the same with RB. Thus if there is problem, it's probably easier to have them resolved easily and quickly because they are much easier to get a hold of. The same probably can't be said for a large company like Brembo where you will most likely get transferred from phone extension to phone extension. Moreover, better price and being able to reuse the hat is a big plus.

Interesting. I track my car, as well. A few questions:
1. Did you weight the old rotors vs. new? If so, what were the weights?
2. You mentioned they were larger. How much larger?
3. Looks like stock caliper. If they were larger, did you have any clearance issues from stock caliper? Rims (I see pic...just wanted to know about stock AMG rims)
4. Did you measure before and after braking distances?

Please share your track performance and experience. Interested.

I have seen cross drilled gyro disc rotors on an E63s on this forum ,There cross drilled with black hats , I would get these too , I’m also not a fan of the light blue hats

TXE55 - how are the Girodisc rotors holding up for you in comparison to the OE Brembo?? I’m due for both front and rear rotor/pads at only 28k miles And never track my car so to me the OEM Brembo don’t seem to last that long......heard great reviews on Girodisc so am considering them and don’t care if they are not cross drilled as long as they perform well and last longer.

Thanks I’m advance for any update you might share...

No issues of any kind with my Girodisc rotors. I've only added perhaps 7,000 miles on them since I installed them but I have run them hard at Talledega, Barber Motorsports Park, Texas Mile, etc...and doing a few auto crosses. I came back with pads smoking and crying for help at Barber, but they cooled down and the discs still work and look great. They are a solid build. Can't wait for my rears to wear a bit more so I can change those from OEM to Girodisc. Super happy!

TX great feedback thanks a bunch! am definitely leaning towards giving the girodic rotors a shot based on several good reviews from members here. my rear OEM rotors only lasted 13k miles and i have never tracked the car!!
